These are hilarious, a full-sized Mercedes? My god! I can't say I haven't seen them before though, we got some similar ones where I live. I saw one where the guy had a gun in his hand, and another they had put wheels on the tombstone.

-I shot him a coupla' times.
-What's a couple?
-Hmm, more than a couple... Really I don't know the exact amount, maybe I shot him 10 times, 12 times?
-Maybe fifteen?
-Hmm, it could've been fifteen...

Next time you're in America check out Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn. Bay Parkway and McDonald Avenue. It's an old Jewish cemetery with lots of old and simple stones, in the Conservative Jewish tradition. But in the past twenty or so years, as the Russians have invaded Brooklyn, a lot of the Russian Jews are buried there (and I'm not even convinced that they're all Jewish).

You only have to see how gauche and outlandish some of those newer graves are. That's why I don't believe that they're all Jewish. Because generally speaking, Jewish headstones are very understated.

Of course most of them are not, PB. I think it was in the 80s when it was still the Soviet Union, Gorbachov made a pact with the US to allow immigration for Russian Jews and then a lot of Russians forged documents to appear Jewish so they could go over to the US. From what I've heard a great deal of them were already convicted criminals.
That's when the first Russians started appearing in NYC, namely Brighton Beach.

This is only what I know, I'm sure somebody else who knows more can fill us in.

That's all true. Turnbull knows a great deal about this subject. Hopefully he'll make a guest appearance in this thread.

I forgot where I put the documentary with a good video of 2 graveyard allies of gangster memorials (one for the Tatarstan gang "Zhilka", the other for the "Sevastopolskiye", aka "The Dragons"). Didn't even like to be buried next to each other, they had to build to separate areas for them.

Great book. One of Lawrence Block's Matt Scudder private eye series. I haven't seen the film yet.
