Harlem, Sonny? Unless they name one of the locals after Tito Puente, there's nothing for East Harlemites to celebrate these days lol.

Don't kid yourself. Hoffa Junior is probably the most honest International leader we've ever had. He hates the Mafia like Giuliani. And that's no exaggeration.

Even though I'm out happy. But too many good men got chased for "bringing reproach upon themselves" over the years, and that's not likely to stop under Hoffa. Because his team are the guys who initiate most of those investigations, not the Federal babysitters. In short, you can still lose your job and YOUR PENSION, for having a cup of coffee with the wrong guy in the wrong restaurant. But it's a big win for the honest working man, so I'm happy. But it also makes me sad for all of the good guys I saw get chased over the years. More than half of them didn't deserve it.

And you know I'm no mob apologist. But when you're coerced into early retirement (read: resign and keep your pension), for having an uncle who was a captain thirty years ago, it's a little bittersweet. And I know a guy like that. Very, very well.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the federal government reached an agreement to end 25 years of strict oversight of the union that was intended to root out corruption and alleged Mafia influence in the organization’s highest ranks, the labor giant said Wednesday.

“This is a historic day for our Teamsters,” Teamsters President James Hoffa said in a prepared statement. “After decades of hard work and millions of dollars spent, we can finally say that corrupt elements have been driven from the Teamsters and that the government oversight can come to an end.”

A judge is expected to approve the agreement on Feb. 11, a union official said.

The agreement calls for the government’s current oversight of the union to be phased out over five years, according to Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. The union also agreed to keep in place an election process for top officers, which requires that all union members can cast ballots in such elections. Eventually the union will appoint independent officers to investigate any allegations of corruption.

“The proposed settlement agreement seeks to strike the appropriate balance, recognizing the significant progress that has been made in ridding the International Brotherhood of Teamsters of the influence of organized crime and corruption, while providing an avenue for the union to demonstrate its ability to preserve these gains through its own independent disciplinary and electoral systems,” Mr. Bharara said in a statement.

Well I can say my grandfather was a teamster trucker for over 50 years and his family was deep in other activities . He worked until his 80s when they took his license away ( for cause lol ) and that was in the early 2000s

They would chase anyone with a union card.

I was a member of 813 for 25 years. Ten of them as a steward, and the last seven as a business agent. Now 813 is predominantly private sanitation, but funeral workers make up more than a third of the local as well.

And then there are very small percentages of other jobs covered through the local. One of them was the car rental employees at the airports (Hertz, Avis, etc.). Long story short, I had to watch a girl who made maybe twelve bucks an hour working as a customer service rep out at JFK, lose her job because her uncle---through fucking marriage---was a made guy.

That's a true story, and there are a LOT more like them. And before Ivy posts an "official" list of chased members (and you know I love ya, kid). You have to know that not all of these cases were official. Many members were given "the choice" to take early retirement and keep their pensions, or go to a hearing and risk losing everything. Well, what do you think most of them did? wink

And that's why those "official" lists of union members who lost their jobs because of alleged mob ties aren't even close to being accurate. TRUST me on that.

Wow, that is terribly unfair. That is hurting working people more than it's helping them.

Well, if you're a shop steward AND a made guy, that's one thing. Crying "discrimination" only makes you look like an asshole. Take your fucking pension, go home, and thank God you're not in Lewisburg.

But when you lose your job at a computer because your uncle-in-law was convicted of shaking down Local 282, that's another thing entirely. There needs to be boundaries.

Yeah, I have ZERO sympathy for an actual gangster, because it's doubtful they are in a union for the right reasons. But an honest working person who actually works to pay the bills should be left alone.

One of my best friends is Secretary/Treasurer and a Shop Steward for one of Cleveland's largest locals, and he said he can't even go to the Murray Hill Feast because if he even said hello to somebody who "was" or currently is tied to OC, he'd lose everything. Cleveland Mob has been dead for 20 years, at least of labor racketeering...could only imagine how it is in NY where OC is still functioning consistently.

813 for 25 years.

Drove funeral vehicles for the first eight, dispatched and made steward for ten, business agent for the last seven. Early retirement nine years ago due to a "health issue" that's now behind me, thank God. I was able to freeze my pension, so I was able to come out full by waiting. It was either 3/4's at 55 (which I just turned), or full at 62. I'm still on the fence about that part. But nothings's pressing, so I still have time on that part.

Just as well. Even with the trusteeship supposedly ending, Hoffa's babysitters will still make it a thankless job (not for the rank and file drivers of course, you know what I mean wink smile ).

After Bernie got outed by Sammy, and Jimmy went inside to die, and the local was put into trusteeship, you bet it did.

Up until that point it was just the garbage, except for the funeral workers that Bernie stole from 1034 (and God bless that one legged midget for that lol).

But post Bernie, it got ridiculous. They picked up everything from car rental agencies to, believe it or not, chicken pluckers out in Pennsylvania. Fucking absurd.
