Why is there barely any info on this guy?

Was actually curious when he died? Even that seems to be a mystery.

Anyone know anything besides being Carlo's little brother?

Paolo died in 1974.

Different sites say he was born on November 19, 1904. But his INS paper work said his birthdate was Nov 20 1904. If you check the Social Security death index it has a Paul Gambino that was born on November 20, 1904 and died on February 01, 1974. I'm pretty sure this is Carlos brother Paolo Gambino.

No more of his wife's home cooking.

A lot more TV dinners, Kraft Macarone and Frozen hot dogs in the sink.

Gotti talked shit about everyone. I think he got caught on tape saying shit about Carlo too. Gotti had a serious case of diarrhea of the mouth.

In the Valachi Papers Joe Cargo said that one time during the Castellammarese War him and Steve Runnelli were driving around hunting for Masseria guys to kill and Runnelli took a shot at Paolo. Just grazed his ear though. Valachi said soon afterwards Carlo Gambino switched sides and teamed up with the Maranzano guys.

That sounds like Carlo...switch allegiance to whomever is the power at the moment. He kept secretly switching his allegiance throughout his career.

I thought Runnelli shot Paolo in the ass, or was that Maranzano shouting at Valachi and Runnelli for wasting time with the foot soldiers instead of the leaders?

I believe there is an FBI report that said he had two mentally-challenged children. (I don't know if it's accurate) As you probably know, he married his cousin which was a kind of family tradition.

Also, the FBI believed he helped to facilitate heroin deals for his brother.

Here you go Giacomo, right from JV's book. This is Valachi saying what happened after they took a shot at Paolo.

I let Steve off someplace on Southern Boulevard, and I went back to Yonkers where Mr. Maranzano was. He was waiting for me. Boy, was he mad! He seemed to know already what happened, and he said, "What did you go after that guy for? What's the matter with you?"

I said, "Steve told me he was a big boss."

Mr. Maranzano started cursing. He said, "This guy is a nobody." I told him not to worry, I didn't think the guy was hit. With that, as I am telling him this, the phone rang. After he took the call, he said to me, "You are right. The bullet only clipped his ear. He got out of that Lincoln, I just heard, and walked away." Well, everything turned out for the best. Paul Gambino wasn't nothing, but his brother Carlo was a big man with the Masseria group. When Carlo got word of the shooting, figuring he might be next, he brought all his people over with us.

Thank you Benny,

Paolo Gambino was big in heroin, like half of the mob was back then. From what I can tell, the Detroit crime family had large amounts of the materials used to make narcs, and many other crime families did business with them, till the U.S. Sicilian pipeline was put in place. Palermo and Trapani were the biggest suppliers to the United States.

Yep, On Paolo Gambino's page in the Federal Bureau of Narcotics book it says Paolo was a big dope guy and also suspected of bringing large numbers of illegal aliens into the country. Probably through Canada.

In Carlo Gambino's FBI files it said Attorney General Robert Kennedy was very curious about the intermarriage between Gambino's relatives and the NY FBI Office put together a family chart of Gambino's relatives for him.

From the FBI file

"after Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy during a November 4, 1963 visit to the New York field office "expressed an interest in the intermarriage within the blood family of CARLO GAMBINO" and the supposed "resulting imbeciles and morons that have come from such close intermarriage." lol

Except looks like Carlo only let his blood relatives deal in heroin, i.e., his brother Paolo and the Cherry Hills. Or rather, dos anybody know of any non-blood relatives of Carlo who dealt in heroin during his time, i.e., pre-1976 . . . .

Were there laboratories in Detroit? Was heroin being refined in Detroit? If so, where was the raw product coming from? And which decades are we discussing? 1920s and 30s?

also, I understand that before the Italians too over the heroin trade, the Jews controlled it, and that the street name for heroin "smack" is derived from the yiddish "schmeck" = a sniff, a whiff, a taste with violent effect. and "schmecker" = heroin user

this is why angelo tuminaro (uncle of patsy fuca of "french connection" fame) was such a key player, as he was married to the daughter of a prominent jewish gangster.

Now that you mention it, young Carlo Gambino does look a bit like the banjo playing kid in Deliverance.

Are we talking about Carlo's brother Paolo, or his son Thomas? As mentioned Paolo died in the 70's, why would he be mentioned on wiretaps from John Gotti? Gotti spoke about Thomas Gambino on the wiretaps, and Gambino was a big Capo at the time, I don't know about consigliere. But Gotti didn't say bad things about Thomas Gambino, he acknowledged his skill at making money, and said that was the reason he wasn't going to take any action against him, despite him being loyal to Paul Castellano at one point. He also said he'd strengthen Gambino's crew after the Castellano hit, but wouldn't give him any hot head, young gun types, out of fear of Gambino one day retaliating.

Unless we're talking about two different things.

In the 1940s. Paul Gambino fled to Sicily after been charged with running an illegal alcohol still. Seems kinda drastic to me so I wouldn´t be surprised if thare´s actually more to this story. The feds claimed while in Sicily, Paul met with Lucky Luciano and organized narco shipments to the US, using illegal immigrants through the port of Philadelphia. But who knows if this is actually the thruth? I don´t think there is any evidence for this.

In 1967, Paul Gambino was arrested for possession of some Polish Ham, stolen from a shipment of a trucking company. The stolen merchandise was found in the Blue Star Meat Market, a meat shop (I think it was) owned by Paul and John Lo Pinto, also arrested on same charges. Paul found the charges serious enough to become a fugitive. I don´t know if this matter was ever brought to trial.

"Paul Gambino, who the New York State Investigations Commission and a U.S. Senate Rackets Subcommittee say is a captain in the family of his brother, Carlo. He was cited in testimony before the state commission for infiltrating supermarkets through a butcher's tool business that offered less than 1,000 dollars worth of equipment for more than 300,000 dollars. He also operates the Blue Star Market in Flushing, N.Y., and sells cheese through the Ferro Cheese Co. of Brooklyn, the owners of Falcone Dairies said. At his Blue Star Market, the commission said, Gambino's prices were less than those of competitors. A partial explanation became apparent when the FBI raided his market, arrested him and carried off a large quantity of Polish Hams that had been hijacked."

http://fultonhistory.com/Newspapers%20Di...%20-%200167.pdf

By the looks of it, Paul Gambino stepped down from his position sometime in the late 1960s. FBI had him listed as a captain, but on a chart dated in 1969, Paul´s name is absent. If his brother Carlo demoted him for some reason, or if he voluntarily had stepped down, perhaps due to illness, I don´t know.

Carlo had 3 brothers. Paolo (Paul), Giuseppe (Joe) and Antonino (Nino). As far as i know Nino wasn't active in the mob or maybe he just stayed under the radar, i'm not sure.

Bronx do you know anything on Nino Gambino?

Thanks Bronx.

On Paolo's INS Declaration of Intention it says he entered the country legally in 1935 at Rouses Point. He must of been coming in from Canada. We know from Valachi and also from Paolo's INS statement on his marriage that he was in the country earlier during the Castellammarese War. So he either left the country during or soon after the war and then came back or maybe he was deported and then came back legally? I'm not sure which it was, i only know it says he entered legally in 1935.

The file says Paolo Gambino was born Nov 20 1904 in the city of Palermo in the country of Italy. Under complexion it says "white" but under race it says "South Italian".

His last foreign residence was in Palermo.

He got married to his wife Catherine on Nov 9 1930 in the Bronx. (Catherine was Paolo's first cousin).

In 1935 at the time he applied for residence it says he had 2 children. It also says the family lived in the Bronx.

1935 photo of Paolo attached to his INS residence application.
