I actually doubt he is the REAL boss, in my head he's just a puppet, set up by someone (most likely Nicholas Santora, Tommy DiFiore or Asaro) to fool the FBI. Just put the word out on the street that Michael Mancuso is the new King, the few agents that still focus on Organized crime might just focus on him instead of the real boss, like the Genoveses have done for decades.

According to Massino's testimony, Barney approached him while they were in holding together. I don't believe it for a second, though.

1) Why would they involve themselves in the Bonannos' problems?

2) I can't see Barney approaching him like that.

3) It's entirely possible that Massino was just trying to paint an ugly picture of Vinny. Because by convincing the Feds that the other families didn't like Vinny, Massino could sell himself as the lesser of two evils.

I don't buy Mancuso being the boss, due to how the Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese view him, not to mention that half of the Bonanno's rather wipeout the Bronx faction of the family rather than take orders from it anymore. You can find some info on Mancuso online, but most are going to be paper reports.

It's reasonably apparent that large parts of his testimony are self-serving distortions of the truth. If not outright lies.
