Two gangsters convicted of murder largely on the word of Salvatore (Sammy Bull) Gravano hope the latest charge against the Mafia turncoat is their ticket out of jail.
Reputed Gambino associate Orazio (Ozzie) Stantini has filed legal papers seeking a review of his conviction because Gravano failed to reveal his role in the 1980 slaying of a rogue city cop.
His co-defendant Robert Bisaccia, a reputed Gambino captain, has joined in the request for an evidentiary hearing in Brooklyn Federal Court.
The two men are the first convicts to claim that their conviction should be thrown out since Gravano was charged by New Jersey authorities last week in the slaying of NYPD Detective Peter Calabro.
Kuklinski is serving a 60-year prison term on four murder convictions. He accepted a plea bargain that calls for him to serve a concurrent 30-year state prison term. He will be sentenced April 11 and will not be eligible for parole until 2046
Well, anything is possible but it doesn't seem like Kuklinski really had that much contact with connected guys. Why would Sammy hire Kuklinski, who claims he was paid upwards of 50,000 / hit, when he could get someone he knows and trusts for free?
There's pretty good reason to cast doubt on anything Richard kuklinski claimed about being a hired hitman. No doubt he was a sociopath and a murderer, but he's also a pathological liar. He's claimed to have been responsible for the Galante, Castellano, DeMeo and Hoffa hits, too.

It's possible. Calabro was killed in NJ. Kuklinski was from NJ. People say the accusations against Gravano were baseless embellishment on Kuklinski's part, but the Kuklinski first brought up the topic on HBO (?) not to any prosecutor looking to cut a deal with him, so that doesn't add up.
Calabro is mentioned in Murder Machine as one of the dirty cops working for Roy Demeo. So that is another connection to Demeo that Kuklinski seems to have.
Why is it inconceivable to some that the mafia might use hitmen for hire? Just because they are supposed to be a group of killers themselves means they always have a made man do "the work?? I don't think so. If you go back to the Murder Inc days, you have the "Brownsville boys" being paid retainer, and then per "job"...by the mafia, to do hits.
The mafia is into every illicit trade, even drugs, but not murder for hire? I don't buy that.

The harder I look at this case, the more I like Roy DeMeo for the murder. Roy DeMeo, Frank DeCicco and Sammy Gravano were involved in an auto theft ring. In April 1980 the Empire Boulevard Auto theft operation was raided by Newark FBI, 6 months later Calabro, who was part of the NYPD Auto Theft Unit in Flushing, Queens, was murdered in Saddlebrook, N.J. on the way home in a snowstorm. There were 3 investigations into his murder, one by the NYPD IA Division which went to a Brooklyn Grand Jury which failed to return an indictment after looking at Calabro's in laws, the Gentile family whose 2 sons had made threats against Calabro and swore to go to Gravano for revenge. The second investigation was by the Bergen County prosecutor who tried to obtain a search warrant for the Gentile home but was denied by the Brooklyn D.A. The third investigation was after Kuklinski confessed to the murder and implicated Gravano in 2003, apparently Kuklinski provided details previously known only to authorities and was able to convince prosecutors of his guilt but died before he could testify against Gravano. My premise is that the Gentile family went to Gravano for revenge on the Carmella Gentile Calabro murder in 1977. Calabro was on Roy's payroll for $600 a week, Gravano and DeCicco knew this and after the Empire Boulevard Operation was raided were put on notice by Castellano to be prepared to tie up potential loose ends. After the Gentile family came to Gravano, Calabro's fate was sealed and Gravano gave the hit to Roy as Calabro's handler. Roy summoned Calabro to a meeting by his house in Jersey and ambushed Calabro as he was pulling up, with a shotgun. Any thoughts on this scenario and if anyone has additional information, I would appreciate their input.
