No. That article and George Anastasia's 'Mob Talk' video that accompanied it were released back in April, after "Uncle Joe" Ligambi and George Borgesi were released from prison following the second federal trial. In now way does the Philadelphia mob make money that would ever be compared to the five families, but they are doing just fine in terms of money.

To be honest, for a lack of a better word, I think that article is pure bullshit. The former cop that was quoted was just speculating and blew things WAY out of proportion - he practically predicted a mob war. That article was basically because Merlino was out of prison and most of the guys were back on the street, and they were wondering if everybody could play nice.

Everybody has fallen in line.

They have literally a handful of money makers. Philly are basically a gambling operation and not a very big one.

Several of the Genovese or Gambino crews on there own make more money then the whole Philly mob.

I think we are going to find out soon what they are into besides gambling, the recent activities in Florida shed some light on what they may be involved in. smile

What does this have to do with Nottingham. Just look at the Philly indictments, poker machines, sports, bit of loansharking. Not much else.

Unless they get into drugs, the well will run dry. Casinos are popping up everywhere. NJ may allow sports betting soon. What's left but a few insurance scams and loansharking. Why does anyone need to be connected to do that? The only thing it will do is get you 10 years instead of 6 months when the cops bust you.

I can believe legal forms of gambling have cut into the illegal numbers, card games, and video poker business. But sports bookmaking seems to be as big as ever for the mob and they, especially the smaller remaining families like Philadelphia, depend on it now more than ever.

And, while I also agree that the mob has long been marginalized by other groups when it comes to the drug trade, I think articles like this tend to overstate things when it comes to other groups - in this case the Russian mob. While nobody would deny there is a Russian OC presence in Philadelphia, the cases involving them are few and far between. What evidence is there that they are high up on the OC "ladder" in Philadelphia?

The Philly mob is certainly in decline but it seems some go too far with that narrative, prematurely overstating it's decline, while at the same time overstating the power of some other groups in order to create this contrast between the two that isn't reality.

Question about sports gambling - how aren't there quicker investigations and prosecutions involved? It seems like a risky racket, with phone lines needed and a lot of documentation. Is tying the made guys in the hard part?

Nah. Most sports office pinches don't even involve a made guy. But they have to have enough action documented to justify the pinch. That takes time.

And those offices are constantly moving...they're not a static target.

That still leaves plenty of open seats at the tables. Would you rather sit a an illegal card game run by murderers or go to a casino regulated by the state?

Well there are plenty of people who don't want to show any money in public.

Tommy, This is an example of what these guys are now involved in.I'm not saying that Philly is involved in this particular place that was raided today, though they may very well be, time will tell. It is widely known in the treatment community down here that these wise guys are involved in both pill mills and shady treatment centers who commit insurance fraud. The insurance fraud is very low risk in terms of prison time and offers a very high reward in a short period of time. Here is an example, these crooks will collect a urine sample from a patient for drug testing in a test cup that costs $20.00 and then send the sample to a lab that is also crooked and that they own. The lab will do no testing and then bill the insurance company for $1300.00 for each and every test that was never performed by a lab that has one employee and their only job is to answer the phone is someone calls. The insurance company will pay it without questioning it once the lab provides the phony documentation. This particular place had 200 clients who were getting tested a minimum of 3 times a week, we can all do the math.

Update, 1:30 p.m.:

FBI raid targets sober home owner accused of fraud

A resident of the sober living housing said he was woken up early Thursday morning by someone banging on his door saying investigators were there.

Colton Cunningham has been living at Good Decisions Sober Living for about 10 months and said it has been helpful in his recovery. He said it gave him an affordable place to live that he wasn’t able to find in his home of Atlanta.

“This place has saved my life,” he said, adding that it’s scary because if he is forced to move, he doesn’t know where he would go.

He said it’s a good place to live where everyone knows each other and is friendly.

Update, 10:30 a.m.: Federal law enforcement agents raided the Green Terrace condominium this morning in West Palm Beach following a months-long investigation into a company that was converting the community into a sober home for recovering addicts.

In March, about 35 percent of the 84 units in the condo at the corner of Belvedere Road and Georgia Avenue were owned by Ken Bailynson, who is the president and registered agent of Good Decisions Sober Living.

An estimated 200 recovering addicts lived at Green Terrace, according to John Lehman, president of the Boca Raton-based Florida Association of Recovery Residences.

Lehman, who worked with law enforcement during the past six months on an investigation following accusations of insurance fraud, said the Good Decisions Sober Living Raid is the first of several in a crackdown on the proliferating facilities.

“Good Decisions is one of the very worst offenders,” Lehman said. “Their whole reason to exist was to bill insurance companies for outrageous monies for providing mediocre clinical services.”

Lehman said he provided information for the investigation, but does not know the specific details of what was found or when other raids will occur.

Update, 9:36 a.m.: FBI agents loaded boxes into a white van here and drove off. Many officers are still on the scene.

Jakob Heir, a resident there, said he was on his way to class when he saw agents outside the complex and received a text that told him he had two options. “Go into your units, or leave and don’t come back until it’s all done.”

He said the condos included a half-way house with over 100 people living there.

Original story: FBI investigators and West Palm Beach police are on the scene at Green Terrace condominiums on Georgia Avenue in West Palm Beach this morning.

The Palm Beach Post reported in March that a company that operates sober-living homes was amassing units at the Green Terrace condominiums. The Post reported that this unique business model for recovery houses was raising concerns about the impact on property values and crime.
