It should not be surprising but the majority of people who are involved in the mafia or organized crime in general are not that well educated.

A lot have just a basic education, many drop out of school early, and a lot don't have a highschool degree.

If you have ever been around or observed people like this it's obvious they're uneducated and their speech and writing reflect this.

Weird how they figure out how to make millions if no billions of dollars? aah, Franzese was college educated and he came up with the gas scam tax?

But for old drop outs like Lucchese, Gambino etc who came up with constant new ways to make money? it's a little weird how they figure out everything and you've gots to be good at math.

The whole thing is how strong you are and how much power you got and how fucking mean you areā€”that's what makes you rise in the mob. Every day's a fucking struggle, because you don't know who's looking to knock you off, especially when you become a captain or boss. Every day, somebody's looking to dispose of you and take your position. You always got to be on your toes. Every fucking day is a scam day to keep your power and position."

They're all homeboys who have lived in their neighbourhoods their entire lives, so I'd say they're all pretty uneducated in that respect.

I've said it before in other threads, Nofio P. from New Orleans was an LSU grad...not sure how it helped him though. I don't remember any extortion 101 classes being offered in my four years there for the summer and winter semesters...maybe it was an intercession class confused

Barney got halfway through embalming school, and his interest seemed to be genuine at the time----and no, it had nothing to do with learning mortuary science as a criminal tool (I'm just adding that because I've seen that bullshit opinion pop up on other boards). But at the end of the day, his Dad's life drew him in. And the rest is history smile.

I completely agree biut generality spreading many street guy dot gamgsters are very street smart individuals, many traits like loyalty, valor and charisma are highly valuable traits in organized crime. You should of seen all the spelling mistakes Los Zetas and Golfos(Gulf a Cartel) were making to each other when the peak of the drug wars was in 2010. They would leave dead bodies with horrible spelling mistakes but to make it clear. They seem to make them to make it more personal and threating or just street slang or whatever. But many of these guys have an 9th grade Mexican education level or were street kids that never went to school and lived on the streets. I imagine it's the same around the world no matter how "sophisticated" some of these groups are. I am glad the cartels are much weaker than before but I think they are getting more entrenched and participating in society more.

Going to a college or university and graduating with a degree are two different things.

When I was attending an excellent university the majority of people I met my freshman year did not graduate at all.

Most dropped out, or failed out. Many would just stop going to classes that they'd taken loans out for or had their relatives pay for.

I doubt the majority of mafia guys you wrote about actually graduated. The guy in Italy who was an M.D. but then joined the mob is an idiot and probably went to a joke of a med school in Italy or just paid a lot of money for his degree.

At the risk of continuing this thread, I will take it a step beyond the lack of education, and say that most of these guys have underlying mental illness in the form of sociopathic and/or borderline personality disorders. There have been many references on this forum of how easy it is for these guys to kill and then go eat a sandwich (sorry, sangaweech). That ability to pigeon hole your behavior, segmenting it if you will into compartments, is sociopathic and is often compounded by additional mental illnesses. That is not to say that these men are not intelligent. Intelligence and education have nothing in common, nor are intelligence and mental illness necessarily mutually exclusive of one another.

Michael Francese dropped out of college because he wanted to do what his Dad did. Tommy Gambino graduated college.

Don't confuse education with intelligence either, some of the most successful men in the world have no college degree. Bill Gates for instance a dropout, Richard Branson of Virgin didn't even finish High school in the UK.

There were plenty of highly intelligent mobsters, how do you think they became so powerful, in another world Lucky Luciano could have been a CEO of a global corporation. They just used their 'smarts' in the wrong fashion.
