Was just watching the Godfather again and was wondering if anyone knew what was being said over the loudspeaker as Michael walks into the hospital. It sounds like a broken record of someone saying "tonight" but I could be wrong.

Also, Mac needed to have an official hospital person legitimize his removal of the Corleone guards. She said, "Your father had too many visitors."

True TB, but she could have been a witness to the murder or murder attempt. If he was able to rid the hospital, apparently, of just about everybody, then he could have found someone to authoritatively legitimize his removal of the guards. Besides, I think her statement that the guards interfered with hospital routine sounded weak.

I don't think he had any authority to remove health care staff and put patient's lives at risk. Think of all the lawsuits.
If nurses and health staff were removed they would call their supervisors, who in turn would create a lot of trouble. It would bring lots of attention and heighten suspicion.

I think she may have been on the take too, but within limits. She would "accommodate" Sollozzo/MacCluskey orders but not to the point of jeopardizing the other patients.

Nah....nurses in hospitals, especially then, were/are always a pain in the ass about visiting hours, etc etc etc they did not need to pay her to say Vito had too many visitors. What was npt believable was that she helped Michael move the bed.

Now, wait a minute. Michael's tending to his father when she suddenly stands in the doorway. If the hitmen were in Vito's room, she cold have easily turned up. She's there when Enzo shows up. What if Enzo was a hitman? She would have witnessed the attempted murder or murder.

In that case, they could have killed her. Where's the threat in leaving her be?

McCluskey getting rid of the guards surely made sense to the nurse. Or at least didn't arouse suspicion. Why would she interfere with police business, especially when it accomplished what she probably wanted to do herself.

But forcing a nurse to leave would have arisen suspicion, or at least questions. Why take that risk?

watching it on blu-ray. the hospital scene is great.when Michael tells his father he is with him now Vito actually cries. we all know it had to be michael. sonny was to hot tempered and well fredo was fredo.

The way I interpreted that scene in the novel and the movie was that the police guards and the Corleone guards were removed separately. First, McCluskey has the Corleone men arrested, ostensibly for carrying illegal firearms. (Remember how Tom makes it a point to say that the men he brought in were private detectives licensed to carry weapons.)

Next, the police guards are called away from the hospital to other details; McCluskey possibly told them that others would be coming in shortly after to replace them. Perhaps they would be legitimately coming...only to find that Vito had already been whacked during the time gap. I seem to remember the nurse saying that the police had only been there just a few minutes before Michael turned up.

The nurse probably wouldn't have thought a thing of it, other than she was glad to be relieved of all those men crowding up her hospital. She wouldn't have been a threat to the mob guys. If anything, the mob guys coming to whack Vito would've been told to keep it quiet. Get in, do the job, get out, don't be seen and don't make a lot of noise. Any collateral damage on their part could've easily brought the heat down on McCluskey/Sollozzo.

Oh, I dunno. Sure, moving a critically injured patient without an urgent reason would have been completely contrary to her training. But as a civilian, she probably had no comprehension of just how much danger Vito was in at that moment, as well as herself. While she no doubt knew Vito's identity as a mafioso, she couldn't have known what that meant in practical terms, as it applied to her patient and herself. She probably accepted McCluskey's orders at face value, without even a second thought.

Something about Michael's presence, and the urgency and intensity in his manner as he told her of what was about to go down, grabbed her immediate attention. Michael gave her that urgent reason to act, and act fast.

I'd like to think that, like Enzo, Michael would've taken care of her for going above and beyond like that.

Several years later...

"Nurse, you remember me...Michael Corleone? You helped my father and I several years ago, and I like to return favors. It just so happens that I bought this hospital and am in need of a chief nurse. Of course, a big pay raise and paid retirement come with it..."

It would have been perfect for the beginning of III--another example of Michael the Philanthropist.

BTW: Moe Dalitz built a hospital in Vegas and was named Man of the Year.
