Check out 'The Untouchables.'

Great Chicago flick.

One of the worst films i've ever seen, i have no clue if it wants to be a comedy or a serious crime film, neither does De Palma. I'm not a fan of it but the series is alot better.

The untouchables sucked, agreed. Kevin Costner can't act his way out of a dust pan & depalma is the definition of inconsistent.

Actually 'Call Northside 777' with Jimmy Stewart is an incredible Chicago cop flick, complete with some of the very best on-site location shooting of the old Humboldt Park/Hermosa Neighborhoods, pre-hispanic takeover.

I like Untouchables but I have to suspend disbelief while watching it.

I believe this film has potential. DeNiro is a great actor, but Pattinson is questionable. Maybe Mad Sam could play a vampire !

Lots of potential movies could be made from Outfit history. DeStefano would be a good choice (IMO). Family Secrets could include different eras and people. What about Harry Aleman and the Billy Logan murder? Also, "When Corruption Was King."

I've yet to see a good Giancana movie, but the potential is there for one.

A film about Sam DeStefano would be too violent.

I think the best Chicago TV series would be about the late 1970's. Corruption was still rampant, they still had vegas, the bosses were still powerful and they still controlled politicians, judges, etc.

A period piece about the 1970's outfit would be great. Sopranos meets The Wire meets Mad Men.

There's supposedly a Chicago mafia drama pilot being pitched to one of the cable networks. Called "Pressure Cooker" possibly.

Both. Mafia culture in Chicago isn't like Mafia culture anywhere else. Whereas out east, it all sort of lumps & blends together. Chicago is something completely unique, from the accents, to the vocabulary, the street uniforms, everything. It would all have to be completely unique to this city, and to be honest, couldn't resemble any of the shows you mentioned if it were to be legit.

I agree with the late 70s though. Specifically the Chinatown Crew under the LaPietra Bros, that would be completely ideal. It'd have to be filmed largely in the Armour Square/Bridgeport neighborhoods as well, and who knows if that would even be possible.

Heh, well I watch a lot of movies. Hell, my favorite DeNiro roles are probably films you've never seen. He's a great character actor (or was), but after the Untouchables performance & the Rosenthal portrayal, I have no interest in seeing him in anything Chicago-related ever again. He's a New Yorker, and just can't kick that accent/swagger.

But hey, we'll see. Tony Accardo was 100% pure Grand Avenue down to his pinky toe, we'll see if he tries to pull it off or if he just phones it in & plays a NY mob guy in a Chicago background.

There's always some Giancana biopic in pre production. It always falls through. Mooney was a very unique, larger than life figure that would be daunting to try & pull off. The only attempt made so far was by Turturro in an HBO film called "Sam & Phyllis" or something. Oh boy, was it terrible!

Not sure about Aleman, he was just a hitter, and I'm sure they'd find a way to half ass it & just make it about some random crazy hitman, with Chicago & the Outfit being afterthoughts. Too bad, because his story is fascinating.

Mark Wahlberg secured the rights to When Corruption Was King, but I don't have high hopes for whatever he's got planned. That story is tailor made for a Hollywood to ignore the Chicago Mafia culture it's embedded in & just focus on the plot itself.

It really just depends on the story they tell. On the surface there may not be much there, but if the script really gets into these characters it could be interesting.

Look at Goodfellas, on the surface it doesn't sound that interesting: Associate rats. But it was such an authentic, compelling, look at the life of a rank-and-file gangster that it's now listed as one of the greatest movies ever made.

It's more about the script, the director and actors than the story itself.

You could list thousands of movies that sounded good but turned out to be awful... aka, Netflix streaming. Half of the descriptions sound pretty cool... then you turn it on and it's unbelievably awful.

You might be surprised wink

Regardless, I don't see anyone doing a good mafia movie anytime soon. I think the only people that can master the genre are those that have a real feel for it and grew up in the neighborhoods. That's what made Scorsese's forays into the genre so great. Even Donnie Brasco has a serious cheese element to it in some parts.

I concur 100%.

And you know, one of the things that made The Sopranos so authentic & well-realized, is that the man responsible was actually from that area! He actually spent excessive amounts of quality time around Jersey Mafia people. The landmarks, the accents, the lingo, the mannerisms, everything was done to an absolute T. It was pure New Jersey LCN put to film

I think our best hope for a quality Outfit film or series, is if Calabrese, Jr actually pulls the trigger with a production company & forces them to produce his specific vision. But that Guy's a complete bonehead & would/will probably get taken advantage of & allow some two bit director to completely botch the project. If it ever happens at all.

Or maybe Michael Mann will actually buckle down & get something right one of these days.

Or who knows, maybe I've got something in the works wink

Years ago this was written about in Playboy, yes, I read it. The break-in crew robbed a jeweley store, the owner and old jew, had a life long relationship with Accardo. Accardo put word on the street to return the loot and all would be forgivven and chalk up as a mistake.

The break-in crew did just that and then a few nights later, I believe Accardo was in Plam Springs actaully, they broke in and took the loot back and left a lone $100 bill in the basement safe.

Each one was killed in mob style fashion and left on city streets, front seats of cars or in trunks. I think 4 or 5 all told lost their lives....

It was amazing read, wish i could find it and post it for everyone.

^theres the first portion of it. I remember it as well, it was called Boosting The Big Tuna. Of course it was very fancified & glorified. But yeah, still a cool read & would make for a great 40/45 minute short film.

There's a decent amount of info on it in Roemer's Accardo book.

Seriously though, these guys had to have been some of the most deserving Darwin Award recipients ever.

Here's a link to the story about the break-in at Accardo's home. Takes a while to read this one.

Apparently they killed or were planning on killing more than just the thieves who actually broke in. Remember this from FS--gonna make an example of one guy from each ethnic group!

Sure do remember that one, Jonny. "Don't have to be too bright to figure that out."

"Bobby The Beak."

Below is one of the bio's about Accardo. Nothing new here. But if you scroll to about 2:40 you can hear Roemer talk about the "break-in." The sound is out of sync so beware.
