Now ok, there's no disputing john was the more dominant one seeing he was older (not that age affected their relationship) since John had the biggest ego and even big brother Pete had to kow tow to him

But in Sammy's book, he.describes Gene as having a "very mean streak "

And when Bobby Manna hatched the plan to whack Gotti they also included Gene.

Now in Capeci's book, he claims a Gotti associate (can't recall his name) think it was Mathew Traynor again not 100% sure since I read the book over a decade ago, cites john and gene got into a heated argument at the bergin hunt

And john knocked gene out cold

No idea if this happened or not since most Gotti tales are make believe

Joh Gotti was mans man…a true tough guy.

Yeah, maybe if you consider being an ego-maniac, wannabe celebrity who craved media attention, with out of control spending and a gambling addiction a "man's man...a true tough guy". :lol"

John Stanfa is correct it's "Like Kindergarten over here" and none of these guys would make it in Italy or Sicily.

2018.

If he took the plea that his brother shot down, he'd have been home ten years ago.

You think he wakes up every morning and thinks about it? Or a guy like that doesn't even care. Is he in the same place as Carnig?

PB. I know we both share a passion with literature. Did u read the book on Charlie Carnig? What did u think?

It has to bother him. It's human nature. He has to resent his brother to some degree. And I know that Genie's in Louisiana. And last I heard, Carneglia was somewhere in the northeast. But I'm not sure where.

I think that book wasn't literature lol lol.

DeStefano showed SO MUCH promise as a mob journalist with the Massino book. But his books about Charlie Carneglia and Vinny were a swing and a miss. In my opinion, anyway smile.

If Gene did take that deal, you think John would have had him whacked? IMO i don't think so. He should have took it.

Massino's book was well researched i thought. hated Basciano's book...it reminded me of a wiki article.
the only thing i liked about carnigs book was the history of queens and ozone park.

I think I read in (Possibly) the Charlie Carniglia book that Gene was the real tough guy. I will try to find that TO BE SURE.

They're probably equally just as tough, John probably won that fight against Gene because he got the first punch in, it could have easily been John lying on the ground, same goes for any fight.

I surmise that the reason he didn't take the plea was because John was on trial at the time (when wasn't he when he was boss) and any kind of a plea would be construed as an admission of guilt which woul d then splash onto John, thereby making him look guilty also since there association was so close. I wouldn't be surprised if Bruce Cutler told this to John and John already was against anyone in the family taking any kind of a plea but his attorney was also solidifying this position by telling John that the prosecutor in John's trial would possibly, somehow use Gene's plea as ammunition to put John away. Just a thought.

After being in jail for that long, I'm sure he'll be retired. But who knows.

John was quite jealous of gene according to some mobsters close to them. Gene was made before John and he was a lucky gambler while we all know John lost thousands all the time

In the words of Christopher Moltisanti, I got no spleen, Gene.

I invoke my right under the 5th amendment of the United States constitution and decline to answer the question.

And furthermore, Gene wasn't the dummy that some erroneous news reports would have you believe. Even the HBO movie tried to make him look responsible for a lot of John's problems, when in actuality he was pretty sharp. And the truth is, John had no one to blame for his problems but John.

Sorry from the replies I've noticed some assume I was asking who was the tougher between john and gene physically. I should have been more clear, what I was trying to discuss is who was tougher in terms of ruthlessness, temper or like sammy said "gene had a real mean streak"

But I thought this was clear since most on here are seasoned pro's on mob lingo

You'll hear so and so talking about "how tough Scarfo was" for example
. And I don't think they're referring to how many people he could ko in rd 1 like Tyson did (yes I'm aware Scarfo did boxing early on) but u get my point

If we were talking physical tough then Willie Boy would have knocked out both gene and john together

In Lou Ferrante's book he said," not every boss is a tough guy because most make it there from using their brains, but there are plenty of guys who never make it to the top but are stone cold killers and much more dangerous than the bosses"

So between John and Gene, from the bits of information over the years gene was possibly the more dangerous between the two brothers

Obviously John Gotti was good at pushing people's buttons and getting them to do what he wanted. However like pizzaboy mentioned gene was no dummy. he was mentally tough as well. in fact one could argue that he was the workhorse for the bergin crew. Gene's big mistake was getting involved with Angelo in the drug trade. However the reason why they had to resort to dealing drugs was because John Gotti pissed away all the crew's earnings gambling

Oh yes, it's funny you mention that because in Sal Polishi's book he talked about how John would gamble a lot of the profits from their weekly high stake card games. and how Gene and Angelo would bicker about it BUT never to his face (gotti's)

My god they must have been terrified of him lol
