Can you quit from the Mafia or not?

Gotti Junior said he had no trouble leaving (?) and Dom Montiglio became an artist - a San Francisco type, so maybe it's possible. Otherwise you could just act useless and they'd want you gone ASAP, LOL.

We got two former members/associates on here. You need to ask TheArm or Italy100.

Should probably ask Mr. Kierney. I guess if you're Italian, you should be in prison.
I've read the RICO Act, and I can tell you it's more appropriate...
for some of those guys over in Washington than it is for me or any of my fellas here

Gotti Jr. and Montiglio are two extremely differnet examples, Montiglio ratted so theres that, and Gotti jr was bringing down so much heat it was in everyones best interest that he just walk away.

Most of the time, you don't
I was lucky
I was young and I stood up to RICO charges and never flipped or blinked
Having a made Dad and two made Uncles didn't hurt either.
I was and am considered low risk, and after all this time, I have proven myself to be solid, but even now I am asked to "check in" from time to time.
Most guys are in for life, and never get away

Been there and done it
I am very much for real, so if you ask, make sure you really want to know.

It depends. In a large family such as the Genovese, I would say it is hard to do at a young age until you become old, worn and paid whatever dues you had to for the family, then you can retire at an old age. There is also the force retirement if you are a respected member, and did something to tick off your family or other families, and your death would just cause a war if you have a strong crew or crews behind you.

In small families that are nearly defunct, it is easy to do as there is really no family structure left and you have a legitimate business for income and are or somewhat financially set, you can do this easily.

It would just be hard in New York as that is where most of the membership is. It was easy for Gotti Junior, cause a lot of members in the Gambino crime family where getting sick of the Gotti's, not to mention the other new york families.

One thing that you have to keep in perspective is that being in the American Mafia is not a job/career per se. In other words, its not a job that you can just quit if you find a better line of work or you hate your boss, etc. But that doesn't necessarily mean you can't leave though.

With that being said, were talking about men in a sub-culture that doesn't see the mob as a job in itself. The Mafia is a business, sure, but its seen as a way of life. Many of these guys never (or rarely worked) a legitimate job in their life, and to go work 9-5 in some company just doesn't click for them. Lots of guys in the Mafia never went to college or even finished high school. They're used to life on the streets, making fast money, hanging out in clubs, and hustling/scamming for cash. And many of them, on the contrary, aren't filthy rich, but rather live day by day with the scratch they make. What else are they going to do if they quit (unless they cooperate and go to the witness protection program, but there are exceptions, like Sammy Gravano. Some do retire, like Matt Iannielo, but he was heavily invested in legitimate businesses so he probably had enough to retire comfortably. But he was in his early 90's when he died, so they probably let him go in peace).

I have a co-worker, who claims that her Uncle was an associate for one of the NY families many years ago. When the Uncle had his children, he began to have second thoughts about the life. He told the solider who he was working for and said he was calling it quits. The guy told him if he wanted to take care of the children first that was ok with him, and wished him the best of luck. My co-worker isn't Italian (so there's a good chance the Uncle isn't either), so I suppose he had no intention of being made. Maybe that is why it was easier for him to quit.

Its much easier to quit the mafia in modern times than it was from the stronger era of the mob. today the mob is pretty much a shell of its former self. Most associates/members arent afraid to flip or even walk away becaus eteh mob cant afford to kill like they used to because of how strong the government is now

Montiglio wasn't made so he didn't quit. Usually only in a coffin

These days I don't think they would stop anyone from quitting. They would take all your rackets and probably your businesses too. If you sold your businesses, they would probably want a piece of the proceeds. They don't even kill snitches anymore. Why would they kill someone for quitting?

LCN is pretty watered down now, hardly any links to the old country or its history and being made does not mean as much anymore. So the idea of walking away is not so hard anymore

Would that view be correct?

British is best....

When I was a kid about 30 years ago I used to mow the lawn for a guy. I later found out that he was (or at least claimed to be) an ex mafia member. He said he was even seen by other mafia members at a baseball game but nothing ever came of it.

This guy had been in jail for a long time, so maybe that counted for something but I really have no idea.

Does it sound realistic, or was this guy most likely making something up?

You're gonna go far, kid.

I invoke my right under the 5th amendment of the United States constitution and decline to answer the question.

The mob seems to have changes a lot in recent years, so I think a lot of the traditions from the past are no longer followed.
I watched a special the other night about Michael Franzese (Older special) And I think he still has to watch his back.

Well, its been a long time since I was a kid and I have not gone far yet. Can you elaborate?

Thanks.
