Is the closure rate out of line for a city as big as NY?? What bothers me is the notations that the small business owners are being pushed out due to GREED of the land owners and developers. Is NYC going to be a haven for only the wealthy??I have a niece who is an actress living on the lower east side who was now forced out due to a doubling of her rent. I am an outsider- what has Bloomberg done to cause this ????

On the Real Life page there are always discussions about the death of the mob, working class neighbrhood's that remain, where Italians still might congregate or live, etc.

As an extension of that discussion, I posted the list in both forums.

Manhattan has effectively become Monaco, the exclusive domain of the wealthy. As you can tell by most of the list, those businesses were some of last "mom and pop" type businesses that remained. Except the Rawhide Gay Bar. I won't miss that one.

Manny's Music - 48th St. Across the street was Sam Ash. I worked at 1095 Ave of the Americas (6th Ave) and 42nd St. I used to go up to 48th and browse thru both music stores. They had a great variety of guitars; some collectors' items. One day while in Manny's G.E. Smith came in (used to be the band leader on SNL).

Tavern on the Green - had dinner there three times. The gaudiest Christmas decorations you ever saw. Unique atmosphere. Food was OK too.

The Rainbow Room is gone, too, isn't it?? That place was just magical.

I had dinner there once, back in the 1980s, and it was such an experience. But then they turned it into a catering hall. Mr. Babe and I liked going to the Rainbow Grill, the bar, for a couple of drinks. The views are incomparable.

I've been to New York maybe a half dozen times, almost all in Manhattan (twice in the Bronx). I've loved every trip, but from what I hear from the people that have seen the transformation, Manhattan and New York in general used to be a much more colorful place. Times Square could hold everything from businessmen, to dealers, to hookers, mobsters, musicians and much more. Now it's just tourists.

Seems to me like Guiliani cleaned it all up, and Bloomberg turned it into what we know it as of right now
