Great article done in the Youngstown Vindicator last year that talks about car bombings often referred to in the Midwest as "Youngstown Tune Ups." This article details the grisly bombing death of Youngstown Racketeer Charles "Cadillac Charlie" Cavallaro and the death of his son and maiming of another son as a result of the explosion. Known hitman/arsonist Dominic Moio was said to be responsible for this and the 1962 Billy Naples bombing death.

Part of the FBI file called CAVBOM on the Charlie Cavallaro bombing death.

No doubt they really were into bombs out there. I didn't know that kids got killed and hurt too...that must of pissed off the law and rightfully so.

After they blew up Danny Greene was that the last of the bombings out there or were there more of them after Greene was hit?

Most of the Youngstown bombing deaths stopped after the Cavallaro boys innocently got hurt, as the FBI sent quite a few agents to speak with the local rackets guys....To the best of my knowledge, Cleveland had 36 car bombs in 1976 and in 1977, John Nardi, Teamster Boss of local 416 and Danny Greene were both killed by car bombs. In Youngstown, the most famous car bombings were that of Charlie Cavallaro, Billy Naples and Vince DeNiro. However, by the end of the 1950's, there were over 68 car bombing deaths in Youngstown.

Check out this article, as Allan May did all the research for it.

Thanks. I remember reading somwhere that there were so many bombings out there that the ATF tripled the number of Agents they had there.

Just unreal out there with all those bombings. Like Saigon during the war in Nam. lol

Being in the philly area the only bombing i can think of is when Phil Testa got blown up. There might of been others over the years but none i can remember.

Of course the philly cops dropped a bomb on the MOVE HQ. Burnt down half the neighborhood. Now that was some crazy shit. Good thing there was a black mayor at the time because if Frank Rizzo ever did that there would of been riots in the street.

If my memory is correct the Outlaws MC used to use bombs a lot. Especially when Taco Bowman was calling the shots.

The sicilians are known to use them in sicily but not here in the usa. Over here they would just shoot them in the head and stuff them into a car trunk like normal OC murders. Bombs are nasty to use...too much potential for unwanted collateral damage like those kids in the article JCB posted the link to.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't that how Gotti's underboss Frank DeCicco died? Youngstown was a total war zone and those car bombs shook the city and it is so amazing how the residents of greater Youngstown kept their mouths shut and truly saw the mafia as their counsel. To this day, a majority of residents will tell you that they preferred when the mafia ran the entire city and beyond, they felt much safer.

Allan May just recently wrote the most comprehensive book ever written on organized crime in Youngstown from 1933-1963. Part 2 is being written now which will cover 1964-Present day. Here is the link.

Here is a fascinating story about Youngstown's DeBartolo Family (Owner of the San Francisco 49ers and the Pittsburgh Penguins)
