I am a little more than halfway through The Godfather. As I flicked through the book when I got it I noticed there was a Book I, a Book II, a Book III and a Book VI. Could Book VI possibly be the new release, by Winegardner?

No. The Origianl GF book was just published that way. What we now know as The Godfather I movie and the flashback scenes of The GF II movie are all that are taken from the book. There is NO GFIII plot or GF Returns in the book.
