Tom Dibella was acting boss in the 70's for Persico. I know he was the one who inducted Mike Franzese in 75. Does anybody have anymore info on Dibella? Did he got to jail eventually or did he die a long time ago?

He became consigliere after Persico got out in '79. I haven't found much info but it seems he did step down in the mid 80's and retired.

Looks like he retired due to bad health

He was the son of Salvatore DiBella, the boss before Profaci.

How do you know there was a boss before Profaci?

Guys, be sure to check out 'Inside The American Mob', the new miniseries with narration from Michael Franzese. Franzese has a lot to say about Dibella and the series is very good!

DiBella died in 1988 and it looks like DiBella served as an acting consigliere in the early 1980s. He was a low key guy who primarily was legit, working at the docks in South Brooklyn until retirement. Probably made in the late 1920s. He did serve as an acting boss in 1972 and to the contrary of what Franzese says, he was made the official boss of the Colombos in 1973. This is confirmed by Scarpa. DiBella stepped down in 1980 when Persico took over.

Not only was Franzese wrong on DiBellas status in the Family but also most likely wrong on the year (1975) of his induction. It probably happened in 1977. He claims (in his book) that when made, he was put with Andy Russo. But Russo wasn´t made until 1976 and wasn´t upped to captain until 1977. One of the guys who was made with Franzese was Vito Guzzo Sr. But Guzzo Sr was in prison in 1975 and wasn´t released until 1977. And also, Franzese described the seating arrangement of the Colombo hierarchy when he was made. He said that DiBella was boss and that Allie Boy Persico (the consigliere at the time) was sitting on his left. But he also said that normally, the underboss would had been sitting on DiBella´s right. During Franzese´s induction, no underboss was present because the Colombos didn´t have an underboss at that particular time. We know that Tony Abbatemarco (who had served as the Family´s underboss since 1973) was demoted in 1977. So Franzese was most likely inducted Halloween 1977, shortly after the demotion of Abbatemarco. This doesn´t mean that Franzese intentionally lied in his book, but was simply wrong on the year. Recently saw a doc where he says "I was made Halloween 1975, a date I will never forget." He may never forget Halloween but the year is off. He was most likely made in 1977.

One interesting thing is that DiBella was in the 1950s investigated for having Communist sympathies!

Thats an interesting point Hairy. Franzese has said multiple times that he was made in halloween 75 however it never seemed to makes sense. Like you said some of those guys were in jail or not made in 75. Also 77 was the year when the books were open i thought

From now on, nothing goes down unless I'm involved. No blackjack no dope deals, no nothing. A nickel bag gets sold in the park, I want in. You guys got fat while everybody starved on the street. Now it's my turn.

I agree that it doesn´t make sense. If I understand what Gravano said in his book correctly, the Families started passing around lists of proposed members in 1975. But nobody was actually made in 1975. They started to induct new members in 1976.

Here´s an extremely interesting article on the Colombos, specifically on the demotion of Abbatemarco and the murder of Albanese. It seems to be spot on although I´m not sure Yacovelli was the consigliere at the time. According to the article, the books were opened in early 1976.

It's mentioned in some FBI files and by Bill Bonanno, who got the info from his father.
