I would say 99.9% not true. Like you said, he would've been hit for sure no doubt about it. Also like you said, Gambino was probably one of, if not the most respected and well like Boss/Mobster of all time. Even if it did happen, and Gambino gave Anastasia a pass; Someone still would've clipped him just to show respect to Carlo.

I've read once (from a questionable source) that Anastasia did put hands on Vincent Mangano while he was Mangano's de-facto UB. Mangano reportedly let it slide.

Joe Bonanno is the one who first told this story. According to him,Gambino was "a squirrel of a man,a servile and cringing individual". He states that he once saw Albert(Anastasia) get so mad at Carlo for bungling an errand that he raised his hand and almost slapped him,but didn't actually make contact.

Bear in mind that when this incident allegedly occurred,Anastasia was the Boss of the Family,and Gambino's superior,so he could have feasibly done it without any repercussions.

Mafia members, according to the rules, aren't allowed to hit other members. For that alone Gambino could have made a justification for taking him out, but according to Capeci's information (which makes the most sense to me) Gambino may not have been on the killing. From memory I think he mentioned Joe Biondo, Steve Armone and some lower level guys and associates. As for the truth of it, I'd say it's possible. I've heard stories of other bosses humiliating their inferiors, although not necessarily hitting them.

Don Carlo didn't follow that "rule" himself. About a month before Joe Colombo was shot he was in a bar in Brooklyn celebrating some activity with some of his crew. Gambino, along with some of HIS crew walked in approached Colombo and slapped him on the face while telling him to stop all the crap with the anti-defamation league. Colombo had to just "take it" and Gambino and crew turned and walked out of the place.

I've read that somewhere too i'm not sure where exactly, but the first thing that comes to mind is one of Toodopeds unsourced stories.

Two different sources. First, I heard about this on the street after Colombo was shot. A few years later the story was "confirmed" in print when a former deputy police commissioner wrote a decent book about the NYPD called "Target Blue".

Didn't Joe Bonannos say it was Mangano who pretended to slap Gambino? And it's probably bullshit. Bonanno was clearly jealous of Gambinos power on the commission and Gambino supporting Gaspare Degrigorio.

Regarding Mangano and Anastasia,

BOTH men put their hands on each other on separate occasions. Towards the tail end of his tenure, it was actually pretty frequent for Mangano to put his hands on Albert, which of course ended badly as Anastasia was a tougher fighter. To me this is pretty astounding for both of them to have assaulted each other. Of course, Mangano didn't make it too long, but putting your hands on another member is a big no-no. Then again, mob rules are meant to be broken.
