Suspected hitman shot dead
Suspected mob hitman shot dead outside Vaughan bachelor party

By: Peter Edwards Crime, Jennifer Pagliaro News reporter

Published on Fri Jul 12 2013

Salvatore (Sam) Calautti, a GTA mobster who was the suspect in at least five unsolved murders, was shot to death with another man outside a stag party in Vaughan overnight.

Calautti, 40, was one of two men found shot to death when officers were called to the Terrace Banquet Centre on Creditstone Rd. in Vaughan around 1 a.m. for a weapons call.

They found one man dead in the parking lot following the shooting.

The second man was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries, said York Regional Police Const. Blair McQuillan.

Police would not officially identify the victims, but a police source told the Star that one of the men was Calautti.

Calautti was investigated in the still-unsolved October 2000 murder of Gaetano (Guy) Panepinto.

Panepinto ran a cut-rate casket shop in west Toronto and acted as the Toronto representative for Montreal mobster Vito Rizzuto....

If it even is mob related murders. My guess would be Calabrians/Ndrangheta/Siderno Group. Like I said of it even is Mob related. It happened at 1am outside of a party? I would venture to guess its just a coincidence that one of the two is mobbed up and they probably got popped by another/other party goers over a disagreement or female. If it was mob related I would by 95% sure it was Calabrians and not Sicilians/Rizzuto.

Calautti was involved on the hit on Panepinto in retribution for Panepinto whacking 2 Ndrangheta guys who were running vending machines in his territory. These 2 guys were Calabrian and protected by the Siderno group. Odds are pretty good that Calautti is with the Ndrangheta. When the Siderno group went to Montreal for answers on the loss of their 2 guys, Vito washed his hands & the green light was on for the hit on Panepinto. So, I doubt it is payback from Vito. More likely some Siderno internal housecleaning.

This is my first post, but have read the forum quite a bit for the past few years.. thought this article was relevant. This is the first that I had heard of a specific suspect in Nicolo Rizzuto's murder

Some background on Salvatore Calautti, one of the victims.

Toronto Star [Toronto, Ont] 19 Mar 1997: A.6.
A man who surrendered to police has been charged in the slaying of a Woodbridge man outside a North York gambling den six months ago.

Salvatore Calautti, 24, of Brampton, was arrested yesterday and charged with first-degree murder in the Sept. 5 shooting death of Giuseppe Congiusta, 32.

A 24-year-old Brampton man has been charged with first-degree murder in a gangland-style slaying at a North York industrial mall last fall. Salvatore Calautti was arrested yesterday after he walked into a Metro Toronto Police station with his lawyer. A police task force had been seeking him in Canada and in Italy in connection with the death of Giuseppe Congiusta, 32, of Woodbridge, who was shot as he got out of his car shortly after midnight Sept. 5 in the Finch Avenue and Weston Road area.

Toronto Star [Toronto, Ont] 05 May 1998: 1.
A 32-year-old man was shot nine times as he was about to get into his wife's luxury car outside a social club, a Toronto jury has been told.

The killing took place after Giuseppe Congiusta received a pager message at his home late on the evening of Sept. 4, 1996, prosecutor Alex Hrybinsky said yesterday.

He told the jury Congiusta's body was found near the MS social club at Finch Ave. W. and Weston Rd. in North York.

Six weeks later, the gun used to shoot him was found in a nearby trash can, Hrybinsky explained.

He said the shooting took place not long after a meeting in the social club involving Congiusta and his business partner, who were in the process of opening up a new pool hall in the Kipling Ave. and Highway 7 area.

Also at the meeting was a man named Sam who owed money to Congiusta, the prosecutor added.

Months after the shooting, the dead man's partner identified a photograph of Salvatore Calautti as being the man he knew as Sam, Hrybinsky said.

Calautti, 25, of Brampton is on trial charged with first-degree murder in the death of Congiusta.

The case continues before Mr. Justice David McCombs in Ontario Court, general division at the University Ave. courthouse.

The Record [Kitchener, Ont] 02 June 1998: A3.
A man has been acquitted of first degree murder in the slaying of a businessman whose bullet-riddled body was discovered beside his black Mercedes.

A jury found Salvatore Calautti, 25, didn't pump nine slugs into Guiseppe Conguista, 32, in a Toronto parking lot on Sept. 4, 1996.

The Crown attorneys alleged that Calautti shot Conguista during a meeting to discuss a debt.

A woman testified that she saw an man fire a gun and run away, but she couldn't say whether he was black or white and her description didn't match Calautti.

A man who was charged in connection with a shooting death outside a North York social club has been found not guilty by a jury.

Salvatore Calautti, 25, of Brampton, was acquitted of first- degree murder charges on the weekend in the death of Giuseppe Congiusta, 32.

Congiusta was shot Sept. 5, 1996, near the MS social club at Finch Ave. W. and Weston Rd. in North York.

The trial heard Congiusta was shot nine times as he was about to get into his wife's luxury car outside the club. A witness said the gunman was in his mid-40s and about 5-foot-4, neither description matching Calautti.

Police are searching for a man after an argument ended in a shooting.

Four men arranged to meet with another man near Falstaff Ave. and Keele St. around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday to discuss an earlier confrontation, police say.

The group, in their own car, followed the man's champagne- coloured 1994 Infiniti to the corner of Falstaff Ave. and Erie St., but when the two vehicles came abreast, the Infiniti's driver fired four shots and wounded one of the men.

Police are looking for Salvatore Calautti, 26, of Brampton.

Excerpts:

Mourners at mobster Sam Calautti’s funeral told of power of repentance
By: Peter Edwards Crime, Jennifer Pagliaro News reporter
Toronto Star
Published on Wed Jul 17 2013

There were awkward moments at the funeral of mob hitman Salvatore (Sam) Calautti on Wednesday, when a priest told mourners that the souls of criminals can be saved if they repent.

Father Don White told some 150 mourners at St. Margaret Mary Church in Woodbridge that Jesus was crucified alongside criminals and that everyone can be saved.

[snip]

On a day of sweltering heat, Calautti’s body rolled into the church in a gleaming lacquered casket, guided by eight men wearing suits, white gloves and white roses on their jackets. Several of them also wore scowls and sunglasses.

[snip]

Father White honed in on Jesus’ crucifixion as he relayed to the congregation the Biblical story of the thief who hung on the cross beside the anointed son and how even he — without needing to account for all the good deeds he had done on earth — would find salvation in heaven.

He told mourners that perhaps there was a goodness in Calautti that could have been called “spiritual.”

He urged them to look to what good Calautti had inspired in them and keep it in their hearts.

[snip]

A man glowered at photographers and pointed at his own head with a pistol-like gesture as Calautti’s body was driven from the church, escorted by one truck bearing flowers.

Ha, the Rizzutos and Ndrangheta have too much class to deal with Ford, they probably leave that to the Somalis' wink

Ontario mobsters on the run
By Rob Lamberti
Toronto Sun
FIRST POSTED: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2013 09:00 PM EDT | UPDATED: SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2013 12:40 AM EDT

TORONTO - Mobsters in southern Ontario are on the run or in hiding out of fear a war with Montreal foes will lead to more murders, a police source says.

“They (Ontario mobsters) know there are going to be a couple more murders,” the source told the Toronto Sun. “It’s quite an interesting time.

“It’s a chess game,” he added. ”Everybody’s waiting for the Valentine Day’s Massacre, but I don’t see it.”

Making themselves scarce are members of a Mafia and ‘Ndrangheta co-operative – with Toronto links – that attempted to take out the powerful Rizzuto family in Montreal.

Disputes within the co-operative ended in deadly violence, allowing reputed Mob boss Vito Rizzuto to muscle his way back into power his release from prison, Mob experts say.

As a result, the source said, police investigators expect there will be more murders in the GTA area of specific ‘Ndrangheta members as the Montreal Mob works to strengthen its grip in southern Ontario....
