Did Mario Puzo invent the whole thunderbolt thing?

No. In French we say"coup de foudre" which would be the literal translation and it happens more often than you think. Puzo didn't invent anyhing in that novel. He's just a tremendous story teller and did a lot of research. That's why he was able to combine facts and fiction so well.

Thanks for the help. That actually answered a lot of questions.

And our French "coup de foudre" is usually translated into the English "love at first sight" expression.

"Come heavy or not at all." Uncle Junior to Tony S.
"Nenti dire ca nenti si capi" come disse quello. (Say nthg when U know nthg.)
"Chi non ci vuole stare, se ne vada." (If U don't like it here, go somewhere else.)

Another aspect of "the Thunderbolt": You and I might be dubious if a "stranger with a cracked face" turned up at our cafe to say he wanted to marry our daughter after one glimps of her. But Sr. Vitelli's reaction is that it could be one of those miraculous occurrences of good fortune that Sicilians dream about. That's probably taken from real Sicilian life.

Ntra la porta tua lu sangu sparsu,
E nun me mporta si ce muoru accisu...
E s'iddu muoru e vaju mparadisu
Si nun ce truovo a ttia, mancu ce trasu.

Well, Makaveli, Puzo INVENTED one of the most popular American quotes made by an Italian....
"A Lawyer with a briefcase can steal more than 100 men with guns"

Did anybody use the Thunderbolt coup de fore slang BEFORE 1969?

When it happens, you know it. Shakespeare is the man. So is Puzo.

There are men in this world who go about demanding to be killed. You must have noticed them. They quarrel in gambling games, they jump out of their automobiles in a rage if someone so much as scratches their fender, they humiliate and bully people whose capabilities they do not know. I have seen a man, a fool, deliberately infuriate a groop of dangerous men, and he himself without any resources. These are people who wander arround the world shouting 'Kill me. Kill me.' And there is always someone always ready to oblige them. We read about it in the newspapers everyday. Such people of course do a great deal of harm to others also.
-Don Corleone about Luca Brasi
