caporegime is explained in the novel. It's the italian for captain. A caporegime has a "regime" with button-men or soldiers who carry out the orders given to them. Usually, or the way it's explained in the novel, the Don gives an order in private without witnesses to his counselor--consigliere--who then relate the order to the caporegimes, who in turn give the order to their soldiers.

True. But some button men were used a bodyguard but were no way near their caporegimes in power. In the first movie or book, Paulie Gatto and Al Neri were bodyguards, but not caporegime. I just wanted to explain the difference.

And there is more than a single CapoRegime in a Family. I know the Gambinos had 20 Captains
