when Luca told the woman to throw his baby in the furnace because there couldn't be any of that race or whatever did he mean because it was not Italian, Because the mother was a whore, or because Luca didn't want anything that came from his loins to walk free in the world.

"Fredo, you're my older brother, and I love you. But never take sides against the family again. Ever."
-Micheal Corleone-(The Godfather)

I just reread the novel not long ago and he made the midwife throw it in the furnace because it was Irish! It doesn't ACTUALLY state that but I assume it was becase of the "race" comment and the baby's mother was an Irish girl.

"Life is so beautiful."

"Even the King of Italy didn't dare to meddle with the relationship of a husband and wife."

The novel explains that the midwife didn't understand what Luca meant by his choice of words, "race" (whether that meant the baby was part Irish, OR if meant the baby's mother was a whore, OR if it meant that it sprang from Luca's own loins). There was no explanation of WHY Luca had the baby killed, other than the race thing.

confused Here, in the New York City area, there is a large number of marriages between Italian and Irish.

Yes. The newspaper accounts of those weddings start with: "Among the injured were..." grin

I thought Luca said this because he didn't want that his child had a criminal father and would be the same as him. And Luca also wanted to be only concentrated on his job, and that is not possible when he has a child.

I'm not sure how accurate this book is, but The Gangsters by Timothy Jacobs has this to say on Al Capone and Italian/Irish marriges.

Quote

...Alphonse met a tall Irish girl named Mae Coughlin. While the Italian and Irish communities as a rule did not smile on one another, it was true that certain circumstances encouraged intermarriage to happen.

Italian boys had no fear of marriage, while Irish boys tended to wait until they were well settled in their occupations. Therefore, marriage anxious Irish girls found an attraction, as did Mae Coughlin, in Italian boys. Alphonse married Mae almost immediately - the ceremony was performed on 18 December 1918.
Seems like a few sweeping generalisations! But I guess his reasoning may be true.

That point's well taken, Injectilo! John Kobler, one of Capone's biographers (his is one of the best bios of Capone) makes the same point: Irish gals were glad to marry Italian guys because Italians weren't averse to marrying young, whereas Irish lads most often waited until they were 30 or older. BTW: Guinness Book of Records used to list Ireland as the nation with the oldest average age of marriage for men.

I also read that 7% of the Irish barley crop goes towards Guiness. That may have something to do with it.

Hi,
From what I read it had to do with Luca himself. He wanted no offspring to live that came from his loins. Luca was one of the baddest people on Earth.

I'm going to have to agree with that. If Luca was really touchy about the Irish thing, he probably would have resented Tom and the Don for having an adopted son.

What is there to sing about? There is singing when babies are baptized, when you celebrate a marriage. Men sing as they work. Soldiers sing as they march into battle. And there is singing when people die.
