Here you have what is probably one of the most "liberal" cities in the world...which in fact is not really a city at all, but rather a bunch of small municipalities strung together to make a city. Cambridge, Watertown, Brookline, etc. are technically not part of Boston, and Thomas Menino is not their mayor.
After the attacks, on the mere say so of the police, the, governor of Massachusetts and Menino, the entire town voluntarily put itself on lockdown so the search for the bad guys could go on, and the danger of further bombings would be abated.
I mean we are talking big time ACLU types here...real individuals. Yet they all obeyed these orders, and effectively martial law was in effect with tanks rilling down the streets...the works. When people were asked to provide information and photos from cell phones or whatever, they flooded the authorities with help. The guy who found Suspect #2 in the boat went out for a smoke, saw the blood, went inside and called 911.
This is an astonishing response and I do not think it would have happpened in any other American city. I know in Florida when Hurricanes are coming and people are told to stay inside, every other moron with a surfboard heads to the beach, and people drive through flooded streets to rubber neck. In New York they would have NEVER obeyed this order. In LA there would have been car chases, the cops would have burned several irrelevant places to the ground, there would have been shoot outs, and the bad guys may have escaped.
I credit this common sense to the true community spirit that thrives in what may be America's most patriotic city.
"Io sono stanco, sono imbigliato, and I wan't everyone here to know, there ain't gonna be no trouble from me..Don Corleone..Cicc' a port!"
"I stood in the courtroom like a fool."
"I am Constanza: Lord of the idiots."

It wouldn't have worked here in Detroit, that I know.
