I'm sure Frank Cali would run the Gambino family very well.

They were all in their 40s leading families because of the Commission trial put everyone else away. Persico was behind bars practically his entire adult life. Gotti was the single worst person for the ways LCN is supposed to be run. Even though Amuso is a stand up guy for never ratting, the guy was a moron who was being used as a puppet by Casso. Gaspipe almost singlehandedly destroyed the Lucchese fam when he got paranoid. Your argument is useless because Paciello, D'vanzo arent anywhere near leading ANY family

Lot of the families have gone back to the old style "make money not headlines". It's smart especially in this day and age because if a hit takes place in Brooklyn or wherever the Feds will be all over it. You'll last longer if you're in it for dough not blood.

Id venture to guess that the average age in the Scarfo family is signifficantly lower now than it was 20 years ago

I'm not real good with math/numbers, but I'd say that mobsters from 20 years ago would be about 20 years older now.

The Commission case resulted in the older, more competent bosses being put away and relatively younger guys like Gotti and Amuso taking over their families. Their lack of ability ended up hurting those organizations. It's one reason why the Genovese fared much better. They still had Chin, who didn't get picked up in the Commission case.

It also brings up another point. The NY families have had the manpower to maintain their size, more or less, but that doesn't stop the attrition of quality.

That's a great point Ivy... the quality of leadership has gone down, and i think that's overlooked in this day and age. People think too much about "earning" or commenting on the earning aspect when leadership is important and leading by example, very important...
