So, they have been making a lot of threats towards South Korea and USA. Do you think it'll go into a full action war?

I think the little fat man is a lunatic, and lunatics can never be discounted. Of course it will all end badly for them, but considering the whole population lives in squalid misery and poverty it can't probably be any worse for them.....

this seems to be a repeating pattern for a while now. they ramp up on the miltary threats, and then sit down with the south and "negotiate". who knows, but it seems like these recent threats are a direct result of Kim Jong-un wanting to show what a toughguy he is.

Yogi you just made my day with "squalid"! Great word! And I agree with you a 100%. However didn't Dennis Rodman have peace and trade talks with this guy?

The staged photos of him and his generals plotting "world domination" are ludicrous!!

This is the way they make things run over there. Tell the people you are standing up to the evil giants.

Like a spoiled kid he will yell and scream and make waves until we relax things for him.

It is time he gets the spanking he needs, But we will let him play his game over and over because we don't want to have to fight China. North Korea is China's pawn.

China is using North Korea and that is what you have to remember just like in Vietnam.

We should put the pressure on China to make them rope in the little fat boy! and stop giving in to the brat.

That fat kid is just doing what his grandfather and father before him did (is this a monarchy or a communist republic?). Namely he is diverting the N. Korean people's attention from the horrible conditions under which they live and rattling sabres. He's a nut case, and the less attention we pay the better. I say if he ramps up his nuclear capacity, we hit them with a nice cyber attack. If he puts troops on the border, fly a few drones over them and scare them sh*tless.

Actually the main thing is not to cave to his clear attempt at extortion. If he wants to shut down that factory that S. Korea supports let him. South Korea won't suffer, N. Korea will.

The only wrong thing we could possibly do is to send Jimmy Carter over there to cut a deal. He burned Clinton in the 90's and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Maybe we could drop fliers with pictures of Dick Cheney over their capital. That would scare them. Hell that would scare me!

I agree with DT. Kim Jong Un is doing the same thing, and very probably it's going to work. Back to negotiations, loosening of sanctions, etc.

Anyway, maybe there's something else going on: [highly speculative part] Maybe there's some smart military advisor in the army who sees that North Korea won't survive the next 5 years. He advises Kim to provocate a war which North Korea can only lose. They don't even have enough gas for their tanks. And as soon as the war is lost, they get rid of Kim. Mission accomplished. [/highly speculative part]

The tricky thing with the North is that it has a huge conventional force with tons of artillery pointed at the South that can/would rain hell on the capital of South Korea, Seoul within minutes. South Korea is one of the worlds most important economies and an important American ally. North Korea has the fifth largest active military conventional force in the world, SCUD missiles, 8-15 nukes, plus missiles to target mainland Japan and Guam.

I highly doubt China would let North Korea do this. They should know that it will piss the United States off and would go after North Korea. China pretty much uses North Korea as a buffer zone, and of course need the USA for economy. They won't back North Korea in attacks and I bet they don't want to lose the buffer zone either.

I remember reading recently about the recent U.S./South Korea wargames (that allegedly pissed off North Korea) and their scenario focus was NOT on the prospect of NK going to war. Instead it was on the possibility of NK self-collapsing and dealing with the refugee/civil war mayhem aftermath.

In other words, we don't take NK seriously. But we have to go through the motions of this charade, like a parent dealing with their child's temper tandrum.

For years my friend, who was Director of the Reserves in the Pentagon for two years, would always take part in exercises on the North/South border. There are plans in place to defend against confrontations from the North, and despite army and artillery size he always insisted that the effects of an invasion would be surprisingly minimal as the conflict would be dominated by naval forces and North Korea has no navy despite being on a peninsula.

True Klyd. In addition, US forces possess tactical nuclear weapons.

Yet they posted some photo shopped pics of troops storming the beaches on an exercise, with loads of ships in the background?? Don't they realise that the US has the intelligence to work out if they have a navy or not??

as far as china approving what they are doing, not very likely. i doubt that the chinese want anything to with any pointless problems brought on by a mad regime that really offers up nothing as an ally besides a physical buffer.

while the north definatly posses a very strong military, i believe the true motivation of its forces are very weak. sure, with the regime in power they will fight hard, as they know their families will be butchered if they don't, but i believe things would come crumbling down awfully fast as soon as their command and control and logistics were wiped out with a few surgical strikes.

soon after, i believe the majority of soldiers would have no problems surrendering, they are people too, and i doubt many of them share the same crazy gene as the dear leader. everything in that country is a charade, as was most evident by the forced, mandatory fake crying when the last dear leader met his end.

These sort of stuff is for their own people, trying to show such a huge military power they are, so that the little fella's power gets consolidated. I don't think they are actually planning to attack.

Well, you do know we've been out of Iraq for a year and a half. That war was mismanaged from the beginning. But the key difference is that we can not have an extended occupation in North Korea because China wouldn't want it.

I think this is a different situation from Iraq and Afghanistan, here if North Korea starts anything they'll be swept off the land with ease.

They have no money to pay for hair cuts, so have to do it themselves, hence the bad rugs lol

They are just trying to scare people and get attention, If they do try to launch an atomic bomb, I think it would go up only about 20 feet then fall right back on them. I laughed when some one on radio called their leader Kim Jong Un-hinged.

I think our newspeople in American know it is is false threat, but are running story as if it is real threat to get ratings.

WE should thank North Korea....it has given us a great reason to send more weapons to Guam and Japan is what I heard last night from an retired serviceman.

and we should not fall asleep like the people that cry wolf so many times. This is still a game of chicken and who will blink first and no one wants to play that game with crazy people.
