Just read a bit about him. Quite a fascinating figure. Does anyone know what ultimately has happened to the New Orleans family? It seems a bit surprising that someone so powerful and intelligent did not have the wherewithal to ensure his regime's survival.

I don't know for sure, but I think it is pretty much defunct. He was a bad dude though. I would love to see a movie based on his story though.

Anecdote:

Bobby Kennedy deported Marcelo to Guatemala on the basis of a known forged Guatemalan birth certificate. After his arrival in Guatemala, he was able to contact his wife and soon she, her daughter Florence, and son Joseph Jr. joined Carlos. They all moved into the Biltmore Hotel along with Carlos' lawyer Mike Maroun and two of Carlos' brothers, Sammy and Vincent.

About a month after his arrival, the government informed Carlos that it had arranged for him to be returned to America. When the party arrived at the airport to embark for their trip back to the United States, Carlos was suddenly told that his visa had been denied. Instead, he and his lawyer were taken by secret service agents into the adjoining state of El Salvador and left at an army camp. Eventually they were taken into the capital, San Salvador, and handed over to the commander of a large military barracks. In due course, the commander informed the two men that they were to be taken to Honduras to a small, provincial airport where they would fly out from the country.

However, after about six hours travel on a small, decrepit bus, the two were simply dropped off in the middle of the jungle and left stranded there. After a journey that lasted almost three days, walking up and down mountains, and in an out of jungles, the two, middle aged, overweight men, dressed in clothes more suitable for urban manoeuvres than wilderness adventures, eventually staggered into a small airport and hired an aeroplane that flew them to the Honduras capital, Tegucigalpa. Evrentually, Carlos landed back in America. Just how he returned is a mystery.

After reading the Evidence about Marcello and Trafficante's connection to Oswald and Ruby, I think that there is ample reason to believe that the two southern Mob bosses played a role in Kennedy's assasination. Selwyn Raab puts forth a compelling argument in his Mob bible.

Marcello was a major player in his day and was very respected throughout all of LCN.

I have done some research on the NO family, and what's left of it, and two brothers seem to be trying to revive/keep things going.

It's more of a glorified crew than family at this point..But they have tied to the Colombo's and have been seen meeting some OC figures in Florida from time to time...

I did a little digging into the T----- brothers on this forum and others and couldn't find much legitimate evidence they were involved in OC. We did confirm they exist but not much else. I wish they were doing something down there b/c I would like to see the New Orleans family come back.

Despite how much influence Marcello had, his was never a big family. By the the time he died, general attrition had taken it's toll. When the Gambino and Genovese families wanted to get in on a video poker racket down in Louisiana, they were told to not worry about the Marcellos, as they "didn't mean anything around here anymore." They did end up cutting a few Marcello guys in on the action and the bust that followed was basically the final nail in the coffin. The family has been been defunct for 20 years now. There's maybe 1 or 2 members still alive.

You are missing the point and your pedantic diatribes oftentimes masquerading as the final authority are growing dull. The thread has to do with Carols Marcello and the immense power he wielded in the US. If you want to argue about that, fine. I can promise you that Vito and Carlo themselves never could have sauntered into NOLA and set up the machines.

Yes, when Carlos' star faded, so did the New Orleans family. But stop diminishing a conversation about an unbelievably powerful underworld figure with obvious fact-based statements as you so often do. When a prominent figure declines and has not set up his family for the future, people can in fact monopolize on that. No shit.

I am on board with your constant - albeit borish - assertions that no family in the US rivals any of the New York 5. But I will go toe to toe with you on the power Trafficante/Marcello had combined.

The hell you talking about? Was it not you who asked, in your original post, what happened to the Marcello family? The last case involving the family happened to also involve some of the NY families. Sheesh.

Again from my research I'm 99.9 percent sure it's all bullshit, The Marcello soldier grandfather,The brothers being made guys, the cousin supposedly with the Colombos, meeting with Tommy Farese, I found nothin to back it up, the only thing we confirmed is that there was indeed a Michael T----- who committed a crime aroun NO in the eighties, nothing more

Carlos Marcello was an extremely dangerous individual. He was one of the few who was willing to go to war if he ever felt threatened, and he felt threatened often. He didn't lay down for New York under any circumstance, and let them know that any made guy visiting NO for any reason had to be cleared with him ahead of time. The implication was he would take the breach of respect as a personal insult and a sign they were moving against him. Frank Ragano claimed the 1966 'Little Apalachin' meeting was set up by Santo Trafficante for Carlos because New York had been encroaching on his territory. Which mind you, when it came to gambling, stretched to Arkansas and Texas. Another thing, the usual punishment for screwing with Carlos was being punched to death and buried in the swamps. Damn.

Read 'Mafia Kingfish'. Despite the fact that John Davis wrote it, it tells Marcello's whole story. The Guatemalen situation got the Kennedy brothers shot in the head. Period.

Surprisingly there is. I think New Orleans was the first city where Italian immigrants moved to.

Yeah but remember how many generations ago this is. The italians in the southern us (excluding south fl), are different from the italians in ne. The whole "guido/soprano" culture shit is lost on them. Trust me here, their just dark skinned white ppl with better food. Ive never seen a italian in the south (who was born there) where a track suit or get spray tanned. Lot of italians down there, but the whole 'wiseguy culture" or whatever, u know the whole dont talk to cops, resolve ur problems urselves, iv never seen it. And im sayin cos i got family down there. Its TOTALLY different.
