Do the Decavalcantes do much business with the New Jersey based crews of the 5 Familys? I know Genovese dominate everything, but just trying to work out if the Decavs operate around them, picking up the scraps, or if they work with them?

I cant really see what the Decavs could bring to any job that Genovese or Gambinos couldn't do without them, but just thought id ask!

Among the charges back in the big bust in 1999/2000 was the DeCavalcantes running a bookmaking operation with the Gambino and Colombo families. There's also always been interaction in the construction industry, since that's traditionally been the DeCavalcante family's bread and butter.

Isn't the consensus that the Decavalcantes are barely functioning at this point with all the indictments, lack of a recruiting base and the federal crackdown on the construction unions that were their sole lifeline?

Should probably ask Mr. Kierney. I guess if you're Italian, you should be in prison.
I've read the RICO Act, and I can tell you it's more appropriate...
for some of those guys over in Washington than it is for me or any of my fellas here

they seem to have at least stabilized since the huge busts of the late 90's/early 00's. i think the thing that alot of people don't seem to realize is that they were never too big of a family anyways, they just always managed to carve out their own little niche in the shadows of the ny families. they still have their hand in construction, and the strong sicilian ties certainly don't hurt.

In my opinion, the jury is still out on whether they've stabilized. Little in the way of cases over the past decade doesn't necessarily mean they're operating strong under the radar any more than, say, Detroit is. The massive bust in the late 1990's and early 2000's gutted the family and I'm not sure they have recovered or ever will. They were always squeezed into their narrow construction rackets, for the most part, but their Laborers local has been under oversight since 2006. If things continue as is for another 6-7 years it will have been 20 years since a major case involving the family.

At their peak, how significant was the DeCavalcante family? Were they comparable to one of the midwest families like Cleveland or Milwaukee?

The DeCavalcante family has less of a historical profile than a lot of families but I'd say there were stronger than Cleveland or Milwaukee during their respective peaks. In terms of size and clout the DeCavalcantes would be closer to Buffalo, Detroit, even New England and Philadelphia.
