I always wondered why Scorsese used this of all names for the character. Does anyone know why Scorsese used it?

Not sure if Scorsese himself chose this name. Probably Nicholas Pileggi, who wrote the script.

Idk why he chooses the names. He probably just picks Italian names out of a hat for everyone lol. But that movie is a classic. Scorsese is a genius. And de Niro to me is the best actor of all time. Him and Pesci together are gold!!! I've never read the book before though. Is it better than the movie?

Probably because it just has a ring to it. Despite these being Chicago guys, the Gambinos had been in the news a lot in the '90s. So my guess is Nicholas Pillegi, who wrote the screenplay just hijacked Nino Gaggi and made it "Remo", because it just had appeal. Gaggi, Gotti, Gravano, etc were names that were in the papers a lot then.

Also could be they were afraid of being sued (or worse) if they used real names. Movies usually have a disclaimer to the effect that "all characters are fictitious...any resemblance to real people is unintended." That is, unless it was intended. That's probably why in "Goodfellas" Scorsese called Jimmy Burke Jimmy Conway, and Paul Vario Paul Cicero.

That could be. It was odd that they couldn't use the term "Chicago" in Casino. They were legally forbidden, somehow. Instead they used "back home".
