On the weekend I was channel surfing and watched Field of Dreams for awhile. In one of the scenes, "The Godfather" is on a movie marquee and under the title it says, "One of the Year's Best". In this scene, Kevin Costner goes to little Minnesota town looking for "Moonlight" Graham, played by Burt Lancaster. He is transported back in time to 1972 when Moonlight was a Doctor. Anyway, there was the movie marquee. You just never know where another GF reference will show up.

I believe the marquee said "One of this year's best", which confused Kevin Costner (until he looked at the car's license plate and realized he was back in 1972).

Splitting hairs aside, that movie is one of my favorites, and I love that particular scene.

SC you hair-splitter you. One of my favs too. For some reason its a 3 tissue movie for me. Costner gets knocked for some of his movies, but I liked him in this film and Dances With Wolves.

Its a tearjerker for me, too, MC. The ending (when Costner's dad meets his wife and daughter, and when Costner says, "Hey dad, you wanna have a catch"?) ALWAYS chokes me up.

Well, it DID win the Best Picture Oscar, as well as Best Director for Costner - as well as nominations for Grahamm Greene and whatshername who played his love interest - so it can't be all that underrated!! However I agree that there ARE people who for some reason find it incredibly dull. What do they know???

And as for his 'stinkers'....TELL ME ABOUT IT!!!
In fact I would say that Dances With Wolves was Costner's last really good film.

IMO, that is !!

Sorry, guys. I'm one of the guys who find it boring and pretentious. I also can't buy a premise where Shoeless Jackson come back to play baseball and have the personalities of zombies. These were players with energy! I just see it as just mushy sentiment without any intelligence or imagination behind it.

Me too - every single time. There's something about a boy & his dad throwing a baseball that just can't be put into words. I think back to my youth & my own father, who passed away at too young of an age. He would help me get warmed up in our driveway for Little League games by being the catcher on days that I was the pitcher.

I think you're one of the few men alive who isn't affected by this movie! I've always thought it was nice enough...but have been confounded for YEARS as to how mushy men get over it.

Kind've reminds me of the reverse situation in one of MY favorite movies, Sleepless In Seattle...and it's constant reference to 'An Affair To Remember'. The women just blubber all over the place and the men sit around wondering what the big deal is.

yeah field of dreams and dances with wolves are Costner's best films to me. He shows great acting in both flicks. The stories are great as well.

My most valued and trusted friend, you are not alone with that scene. Just seeing the title of that movie or hearing someone mention it brings me right to that scene. You can really feel for him, the joy that he had inside because he was about to catch up with something he yearned for all his life... a catch with his dad.

Field of Dreams may have been manipulative, but it had its moments. How about when Ray Liota says to Kevin Costner, "Ty Cobb asked us if he could play, and we told him to stick it!"

Also, James Earl Jones played a mean J.D. Salinger, and it's always good to watch Costner, with the top down, driving along the highway with the Allman Brothers' "Jessica" in the background.

Good stuff.

Back to your regularly-scheduled movie trilogy ...

Its my favorite James Earl Jones role. I absolutely love the scene when Jones makes the speech imploring Costner to keep the field:

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again. Oh people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come".

Its one of the best monologues I've ever seen in any movie.
