Its a joke your asking why! Your on a highly populated Italian site, I bet you 99% of the people out therre if tgere Itakian would get offended by that question! Sinatra is a very important ICON to our people!

And by asking if it was a joke was purely Sarcasm

Your right i'm not a fan of either but my dads a massive Sinatra fan. To jazz fans though (which i assume you are) he's bigger than Sinatra. Being a neutral though i'd say Sinatra is more popular but i maybe wrong.

Do you seriously think people would be offended by it? I guess most would say Sinatra regardless of ethnicity but i still doubt any the Italian members would actually be offended.

So you're actually offended ? If so point taken i just don't see why asking if someone was better than Sinatra is offensive in the slightest.

You need to put it in perspective, when Frank came along there were no other Italians who were glamorous, prestigious etc. He gave our grandparents pride, they pounded him into our parents heads, we got it pounded into our heads!
The Irish have the Kennedy's, we have Frank!

No offence, but i still don't have a clue why someone preferring or asking if anyone prefers someone to Frank would offend you? Did you mean to say offend? If so that's ridiculous .

Me personally no I could care less, the Old Timers most likely would throw a fit! Offended would be getting off easy. To back 40- 50 years those people had very little to cheer for, so when they did they became passionate about it and very loyal.

To our good Euro Football(soccer) fans, there is a very passionate following for your teams and players no? It's along the same lines!

I dont know what you are talking about. 40-50 years ago , italians were already "assimilated" into american culture/society . Just like the irish. Now if we were talking about the early 20th century then i could see your point

I don't know what your talking about or what calendar your using. The last generation of Italins was the first to break the "glass ceiling" and go from primarily blur collar workers to a mix of Proffesional and Blue collar. It's the baby boomer generation which is now totally progressed. They were all kids 40- 50 years ago.

Look , there were "glamorous" italians before sinatra stepped on the scene. He wasnt the first. By "assimilation" , i merely meant being exposed in mainstream american culture. There were popular italian american celebs before Sinatra.

A few things of note:

This bulletin board is for a worldwide audience and it does not cater to any particular group. True, most of our members are American but, once again, no particular group in the USA is its audience.

The original question in this thread is a legitimate question. It's a question of preference and I don't think that one's ethnic background should be their sole defining answer to this (but that's just me).

There were two major crooners of the 20th century before Sinatra who weren't Italian (Al Jolson and Bing Crosby).

FWIW - I think Sinatra was the best ever. His voice, timing and delivery were peerless and he was "bigger than life". But to call a question a joke because of one's ethnicity is just plain wrong.

For me Cole had the better voice but Sinatra was the better all round entertainer..

I think it's a legit question. Everyone has their favorites.

I always liked Nat King Cole's voice from Mona Lisa to (more during my time) "Lazy Hazy Crazy Days Of Summer"(remember that one?)

Yet between the too, I also would go with Sinatra. smile

On a side note, speaking of favorite, or who's better, I grew up(thankfully to my parents & older brother), listening to a pretty wide range of entertainers (many Italian). My brother's favorite singer was Joni James (of Why Don't You Believe Me fame). My sister and I would tease him mercilessly saying "nobody knows who she is" (as we were into the English Invasion and of course Elvis). lol We still tease him today. Everyone has their favorites.

King Cole was a merry old soul. However, I don't know if he could hold a tune.

The answer to the question is Johnny Hartman...
