Often I have read/seen how the real mob guys loved the Godfather, how it was like a bible to some etc. How was Goodfellas received by the mob? Guess some Lucchese guys had some opinions, anyone here of discussions, wiretaps etc on it?

The main reaction I've seen is disgust that someone like Henry Hill (who wasn't really thought of that highly even before he ratted) got the Hollywood tough guy treatment. I'm guessing anyone who actually knew Henry gets a big laugh out of that movie.

Im obviously not a wiseguy but I follow OC very closely. I might get destroyed for saying this but am I the only one who thinks the Godfather was a tad bit overrated and think Goodfellas was better?

Goodfellas is more realistic but I certainly don't think The Godfather is overrated. Goodfellas is a more accurate look at mob life while The Godfather is a romanticized film that's really about "family" set in a mob context.

Anyway, they're both part of the cream of the crop of mob cinema. One could watch The Godfather I and II, Goodfellas, Casino, and The Sopranos and that would be enough.

I hear ya Ivy...dont get me wrong, I loved the Godfather, both 1 and 2, but I mean its considered one of the 5 best movies of all time and that's just crazyness IMO

Well, it's all subjective in the end, but a lot of people would argue I and II deserve to be considered among the top 5 movies of all time as much as any others. You'll routinely see The Godfather listed along with other classics long said to be the greatest ever - Citizen Kane, Casablanca, etc.

i love 'casablanca',but 'citizen kane' is the most boring fucking film of all time.

I prefer Goodfellas too, and am I the only one who prefers GF1 to 2??

I liked GF1 and 2 mixed together. But my favorite Mob movie is Bronx Tale followed by Casino.

I've never understood the debate about which one was better, Godfather I or II. Both sides of the same coin, in my opinion.

For me, the expanded role for Cazale along with the inclusion of Bobby D gives G2 the slight nod for me over G1.

I don't think Godfather is overrated, but I like Goodfellas more.
Godfather 1 was better than Godfather 2, I like the New York City setting more.

I think two was better solely because of the whole "flashback" sequence with Vito, I love the shots of Sicily and the 1910's tenements,Genious

Anyone agree that watching GF 2 first is a good move! My father in law hasnt seen either! Poor guy has me for a son in law and hasn't seen either GF!

I guess i'm in the minority but to me Goodfellas isn't even Scorcese's best film i personally prefer Taxi Driver and The King Of Comedy. I also think GF 1 is better than the second not by much though.
