Good read and Buddy Mcgrit is still involved as a trainer in boxing so it could still go on in some manner and its boxing so its a corrupt sport, supppose it could trickle to MMA

I'm not much into MMA, but I'm a boxing guy for forty years. And as a boxing fan, for the sake of MMA I can only hope that it doesn't "trickle" over there.

Fixed fights are the main reason that boxing is such a dead sport today. It's very telling that the two sports most closely associated with the mob (horse racing and boxing) are shadows of their former selves today. The public doesn't like to get ripped off.

as far as corruption trickling into mma, no chance! the only real money to be made in mma is in the ufc(belator puts on some decent mid level cards though!). the ufc basically has a monopoly on all of the high level fights/fighters, which is a good thing in combat sports. dana white runs a tight ship and anything fishy just wouldn't stand a chance.

but corruption did exist in pride fighting championships, a huge japanese mma organization that existed from the late 90's until 2006. at their peak, they had better fighters and put on much bigger shows than the ufc! the yakuza was directly involved, and fixed fights from time to time to help build up the japanese stars, which they were in short supply of. the most notable example of a fixed fight was the one between nobuhiko takada and mark coleman, which saw takada defeat the heavily favored wrestler with a very shady heal hook which coleman dove into.

I have been meaning to check this out when I get some free time.

Off topic: I wont say any names until it is confirmed, but I have received various messages indicating that a certain Gambino soldier involved in construction/real estate extortion has flipped. He was originally busted on mafia takedown day. I will update the board if I hear anymore.

Tommy Shots: They want me running the family, don't they know I have a young wife?
Sal Vitale: (laughs) Tommy, jump in, the water's fine.

I don't think the UFC is mob controlled but the Fertitta family seems to have a checkered past. And White himself likes to talk about his past mob connections in Boston.

the fertitta's father, frank sr i believe who recently died, was said to have a few shady connections/business partners back in the day, but he was around in the "old vegas" days so anybody in his occupation would have some shady people they were involved with. as far as dana white, he owned a small boxing gym in south boston, and he was shook down personally by kevin weeks. he didn't pay up, and it was the reason he left boston and came to las vegas, so i guess you could say the winter hill gang helped make the ufc what it is today lol

here is a quote where dana talks about the irish mob...

“If you look at mafia movies, mob movies like ‘The Godfather,’ they’re really sophisticated, but the reality with gangsters is it’s more like the Johnny Depp movie ‘Donnie Brasco.’ They’re sawing off f****** parking meters to try and break into them. That’s really what it’s like. It’s guys trying to make money any way they can, whether shaking people down or something else. That’s what they do. One day they walked into one of my classes, literally walked into the middle of one of my f****** classes and said, ‘Yeah, we need to talk to you.’ I’m like, ‘I’m teaching a class.’ They’re like, ‘Yeah, we need to talk to you.’

“We walk into the hallways and one’s like, ‘Do you know who I am?’ I was like, ‘No,’ but the way this thing was going down I had a feeling who it might be. It wasn’t (Boston mafia figure) Whitey Bulger. It was two of his guys. Kevin Weeks was one of them. ‘You owe us $2,500.’ ‘Really? Well that sucks.’ ”

They knew White had a girlfriend, knew where he worked, probably knew where he lived, and the implications were clear. So when they called a few days later, he bought a ticket to Vegas, slipped aboard a plane and ran to a brand-new life.

Fertitta was apparently involved in the skimming of the Tropicana casino with the KC mob. He was caught on an FBI bug talking about it, though he was never charged.
