So, what's the difference between captain and acting captain?Or between acting underboss, and underboss?

I think like any other job that "acting" is referencing that the individual is the one in charge - in your case - of a crew, but doesn't mean he will hold onto that title. It's just a place holder until the legitimate captain comes back (from jail presumably) or is selected by the boss (as in the case of a captain that has died, retired, or is not getting out of jail anytime soon).

Acting is generally temporary. Usually because the person normally in that position is unable to perform the role day-to-day (usually due to prison time), or because someone has died or turned gov witness or something, and it is yet to be formalised who will have the job on a permanent basis.

johnny boy has gotten it. an acting is more common than you think.many skippers will promote a man to 'acting' status, to put him out front as a 'shield'. the most common example of this that i know locally is danny marino and johnny 'grease' gammanaro. danny only talks 'shop' with other skips or higher. johhny g has enough respect to be able to sit with anyone danny doesnt want to. he is smart enough to settle a beef on dannys behalf. meanwhile, danny gets his kicks and j.g. gets his piece of the 'action'.

only a captain or above can promote a button to 'acting' status. if a skip goes to jail, he chooses an acting. but it can be over ruled by the boss. there is another instance where a soldier can be promoted to 'acting' technically, but it is different and quite confusing if you dont understand the unwritten formalities of a sit down.

Not much of a difference, If an Underboss is going to prison for along time and can't be ass*d organizing crime from his jail cell then he or the Boss will elect an Acting Underboss, who will take control for a short while until the offical Underboss want's his place back. It hasn't always worked this way. Sometimes if the Boss likes the acting Underboss and when the offical wants his place back then he might not allow it.
