The man known as the voice of Elmo denies claims he had an inappropriate relationship with an underage boy. In June, the Sesame Workshop heard from a 23-year old man who claimed he was just 16 when his relationship with the then 45-year old puppeteer began.
Kevin Clash was granted a leave of absence to take action and protect his reputation. Sesame Street's investigation found no instances of wrong-doing, but management did discipline Clash for "exercising poor judgment and violating company policy."

I saw this in the newspaper headlines earlier today (actually, yesterday). The NY Post had Nookie Monster on their front page, along with Mr. Clash's picture.
And then, guess what happened? On the late TV news, the story broke that Mr. Clash's accuser has now recanted his story and says that he was of legal age when he and Clash got together.
Meanwhile, the puppeteer has been publicly "outed" and his reputation may have suffered permanent damage. If the story really was a load of BS, will the retractions be printed in headlines as large as the original accusations? Probably not.
But, you know, Elmo himself may not be quite as innocent as portrayed. Below is the cover from an actual Sesame Street book. You be the judge.
