It sounds like a bad porno.

Biographer: I want the whole...hot...hard...long...truth.
Petraeus: I want to show it to you.

Tell me about it, I am tired of reading about him being a military genius.

Speculation is that they (Petraeus and his biographer/lover) used the draft feature of his Gmail acct to leave messages for each other w/o actually sending email messages, so she had access to his acct. Apparently, she or “someone close to her” was sending 'harassing' emails to his Gmail account contacts. Yeah, that's a National security problem, and I see why he resigned immediately.

Today's NY Daily News:

We can joke all we want about the General's Privates standing at attention for inspection (and we will), but I really feel sorry for Petraeus's wife of 37 years. Something like this is devastating enough for a person to bear when the people involved are not public figures. This must be at least a thousand times worse.

It's a pity. He did turn things around in Iraq. It was way worse before him.

It's one thing to screw up your personal life, it's another to screw up your work. I don't think they have anything to do with each other. In fact, if you want to do your job better, you usually do worse in your personal life. I'm not sure why it's expected of people to step down from office because of infidelity.

David Petraeus affair: Paula Broadwell's 'love rival' Jill Kelley speaks out

Telegraph.co.uk

The woman who triggered the FBI investigation into General David Petraeus’s extramarital affair after she was allegedly sent a string of harassing emails by his mistress has spoken out about her relationship with the former CIA director.

By Sarah Titterton
11:16AM GMT 12 Nov 2012

Jill Kelley, a 37-year-old civilian who organised parties for the US military, said she and Gen Petraeus were "friends", and added that she respects his privacy.
"We and our family have been friends with Gen Petraeus and his family for over five years. We respect his and his family's privacy and want the same for us and our three children," Mrs Kelley said in a statement.
A source close to the Petraeus family confirmed to Reuters that Mrs Kelley, and her husband, Scott Kelley, a Tampa cancer surgeon, became friends when Gen Petraeus was stationed at MacDill from 2008 until 2010 as commander of the military's Central Command (Centcom), which runs operations in the Middle East.
The couples stayed in touch, later meeting in Washington when the Kelleys visited relatives.

The source stressed that Mrs Kelley and Petraeus "are longtime friends and nothing more." Other American media also reported that claim.
Photographs showed the Petraeuses and the Kelleys posing together at a pirate-themed festival in 2010 and ABC News reported that the families had spent Christmases together.
Mrs Kelley allegedly became frightened after Paula Broadwell, the former CIA director’s biographer and reported lover, reportedly sent a number of threatening messages to her, including a warning to "stay away from my guy".
According to The New York Post, Mrs Broadwell, a mother of two, told Mrs Kelley: “I know what you did” and warned her to “back off” from the 60-year-old former general.
It is not clear why Mrs Broadwell would believe that the mother-of-three, posed a threat to her relationship with the general.
As federal agents began to review the emails they quickly realised that the head of America’s top intelligence agency was involved in a sexual affair with a married woman and began an investigation to see if there had been any breach of national security.

Although the emails, believed to have been sent anonymously by Mrs Broadwell, 40, were said to have contained hints at classified information, the FBI concluded that there was no security threat and that they were instead looking at a case of lover’s jealousy.

Mrs Broadwell did not respond to The Daily Telegraph’s attempts to contact her at her home in North Carolina.
Gen Petraeus has made no public statement since his abrupt resignation on Friday, when he announced that he was stepping down because he had shown “extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair”.
Steve Boylan, a former army officer and close confidante of the decorated commander, said Gen Petraeus told him over the weekend that he felt he needed to “come clean with the American people”.

“He screwed up, he knows he screwed up, now he’s got to get past this with his family and heal,” said Mr Boylan.
That narrative, however, seemed to contradict the account given by government officials to media outlets, which claims that Gen Petraeus resigned only after being confronted by FBI agents two weeks ago and was then urged to step down on Tuesday by James Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence.
Gen Petraeus met his wife of 37 years, Holly, in the mid-1970s while studying at West Point military academy, where her father was the school’s superintendent.
He has often publicly praised her devotion as she stayed at home to raise their two children while he spent long postings abroad.

His decision to accept the CIA post meant that the couple were finally reunited and moved into a rented home in northern Virginia, where the basement was renovated to fit secure communications equipment.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Broadwell affair began in August 2011 just as Gen Petraeus was preparing to leave the military and continued until a few months ago.
Despite the political fallout, the CIA is not expected to conduct an internal investigation and senior figures in the agency are reported to be satisfied that Gen Petraeus’s infidelity did not lead to an intelligence leak.
Washington remained stunned over the weekend as more details emerged about the tawdry end to the career of one of America’s most celebrated soldiers.

I think what ruined Petreaeus wasn't that he cheated (look at the unfaithful public officials who kept their jobs), but that whole (stupid) e-mail thing going on with her which could've been exploited by foreign powers, which was just sloppy wrecklessness, we expect more especially from the director of the CIA of all people.

Once that e-mail detail came out, there was no way Petreaeus would've kept his job.

I wasn't even following this story til today. I just assumed it was another political sex scandal. (pretty sad that they are not that surprising anymore hu?) Anyway, I am really really confused. I found this post on the "Crooks & Liars" site that roughly (comically) sums it up. lol

Petraeus was boinking Broadwell. Then Petraeus started boinking Kelly. Broadwell told Kelly to stop the boinking via email. Shirtless dude, who also wanted to boink Kelly, complained to Cantor (we don’t know who Cantor was boinking), who clutched his pearls and complained to the CIA. Meanwhile, the FBI, which wanted in on the boinking, wrote to the CIA, at which point Patraeus resigned because he couldn’t continue to do his job amidst all the boinking.

Now Fox wants an investigation and impeachment of Obama because, well, that’s what they do.

How could foreign powers have exploited his extra marital affairs? What would've been the worse leverage that they had against him? So the cat is out of the bag now, why did he have to step down?

Afs,

As I understand it he wasn't asked to step down but rather resigned. Now, whether or not he would have been told to step down is another story. confused

I'm still confused and not quite sure what the story here is except a complicated affair.
