first i thought Iceman was great - then Murder Machine. Gaspipe is incredible. Cant put it down. Ive been to La Tavola, and to think they closed it down to "break bread" with Gotti/Bull - Gaspipe/Amuso. Midway through this amazing read...

Yes it is a great book. Better than Iceman in my opinion.

Have you read the Butcher, about Tommy Pitera? That is my favorite.

I personally love the Gaspipe book despite a few inaccuracies by the author

Tommy Shots: They want me running the family, don't they know I have a young wife?
Sal Vitale: (laughs) Tommy, jump in, the water's fine.

Hard to believe that anyone liked this book. Begins well but rapidly falls into a chapter by chapter report of various facts or opinions. Really poorly written and certainly not biography or history. Junk! No Stars!

You gonna finish that?

from far away 'gaspipe' doesnt look like much. i never met him peronally but i remember seeing him around the neighborhood. i remember someone my age telling me who he is and pointing him out. he was about 5,5. maybe. i remember a older guy who i really respect and still consider being one of the toughest old guys i know telling me hw was genuinly scared of him. he was also one of the two people ever my father ever told me to avoid at any costs if i could. the other wad greg scarpa so id say my pop had a pretty good instincts.lol.

i have not read any of them actually.i have only read 'making jack falcone',and parts of one of those selwyn raab books. i enjoyed garcia's story [as biased as it was] but reading about this kind of thing never really caught on with me.mostly i will read more 'historical' non-fiction.something like politics or ancient rome or japan, some thing that interests me.i guess im 'burned out' on 'mafia' stuff.

i do remember when scarpa took a shot at jerry lang though. was it what,91?lol.thats a story...

Yeah. Not to disrespect the dead, but Carlo could be a little sloppy with facts. There were some minor inaccuracies in the Butcher too. And sometimes he amps up the melodrama a little too much. But the books are entertaining.

Is it an autobiography with gaspipe talking? Is it better than "mafia prince" or "underboss"? I love the book underboss. It really made me realize sammy really wasn't as bad of a person people portray him to be. I respect sammy. He wasn't crazy. He only killed people within the mafia. And obviously if he refused to kill he would've been killed. Gotti got what was coming to him because he double crossed Sammy and talked behind his back. And he took the wrap for his kids in the ecstasy ring in AZ. He really wasn't even involved in it. I read that in Karen gravano's book.

Bumping this up with a comment about Jimmy Hydell being given a contract to whack Casso....

In my opinion, the attempted murder of Casso seems to have been in retaliation for Gaspipe blowing up Frank Decicco, and his plans to whack John Gotti. Angelo Ruggiero gave the contract, and he was close to Gotti. However, most accounts don't link the attempt on Casso's life with his focus on whacking Gotti, nor with DeCicco's murder.

The popular theory seems to be that Angelo acted alone and without Gotti's knowledge. I find that very hard to believe. Both the DeCicco murder and the attempt on Gaspipe's life occurred in 1986, so the timeline works.

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it.

Why would Gaspipe give the contract to Hydell? he would have picked a made guy to do the hit not Hydell. Also keep in ming that Mikey boy paradiso also had a big beef wih Gaspipe at the time over some babaina deal that went bad.

From now on, nothing goes down unless I'm involved. No blackjack no dope deals, no nothing. A nickel bag gets sold in the park, I want in. You guys got fat while everybody starved on the street. Now it's my turn.

We might be talking about two different things here. Angelo Ruggierio (who was a made guy) gave the contract to Hydell.

I went back to the book and the title of Chapter 41 is "The Golden Ox Incident: Gotti's Revenge?" The book is, in fact, implying that Gotti may have been behind the order to whack Gaspipe. However, as Beanshooter pointed out, a bad drug deal seems to be the general consensus on why the contract on Gaspipe's life was handed out.

In Chapter 44, there is a lunch meeting with Gotti, Casso, Sammy the Bull, and Amuso.
Gotti is quoted as saying to Casso, "Problem is, there's all these...rumors out there, about you, about me, and it's easy for misunderstandings to be created...."

I enjoyed reading "Iceman" however as we have now learned, author was taken for a ride by the subject, Richard Kuklinski who told him he was involved in murders which he actually wasn't. I also enjoyed "Gaspipe" and Carlo had a great inside to Gaspipe by being his next door neighbor. Very well done. Lastly a really liked Butcher. Tommy is now saying some of it is not true, but Carlo isn't with us anymore to defend himself. I'm sure many of the things Pitera and his friends are now saying are just self serving. I read somewhere on here that Pitera actually thinks he has a chance of getting out. So....overall I would say Carlo is a good author.
