i really hope the mom wins her suit and the neighbor gets a major fine. anyways though since when was it a crime to have your kids playing outside, either supervised or unsupervised?

Unfortunately, this happens, and once a complaint is made, it's almost impossible to get out from under it. While I understand that they want to make sure children are safe, it has gone too much to the other side, like lots of other things!

Parents, don't let your kids outside ever again. Let them stay in the house play on the computer, video games, watching tv. I hope she wins big time.

Any police officer that makes an arrest solely based off a report from a citizen is a retard.

Here in NY, if a complaint is filed, even if the police don't make an arrest, a full investigation has to be made by Children's Services. That includes turning over all your child's medical records, school records and allowing an investigator into your home any time they knock on the door. This is done, even if the investigator knows that the complaint is completely false.

I didn't even know it was a crime to let your children play outside unsupervised. In that case, my parents should be serving life in prison right now.

It depends on what you mean by "unsupervised". The people that lived across the street from us in our first house would shove their kids outside from morning to night. They depended on the neighbors to care for them, even feed them. One day, while pregnant with her seventh, the mother stopped me to ask if I had seen their 10 year old. He had left the house at 10 in the morning and she had no idea where he was, and it was now 6 at night. One night, we found their three year old in our backyard kiddie pool after dark. She was blue and shivering with cold. My husband wrapped her in a towel and took her home. He advised her father to get her out of her wet bathing suit and get her in a hot bath. Not five minutes later, she was outside riding a Big Wheel in the middle of the street, still in her wet bathing suit.

The kids weren't "abused", but they were certainly neglected. It was disgusting. Would these people be arrested for their kids playing unsupervised? Yes, but they would have deserved it.
