Ka Boom?

I don't know how Beijing can expect for the U.S. (treaty obligated to defend Japan) to stay neutral out of this spat.

Quote:
Anti-Japanese protests are continuing across China as the countries' competing claims to a group of islands threatened to escalate. There were reports that a large flotilla of Chinese fishing boats was due to arrive in the area later on Tuesday. As the region braced for the possible arrival of up to 1,000 fishing boats in waters near the disputed Senkaku islands – known as the Diaoyu in China – Beijing reacted angrily to reports that two Japanese activists had briefly landed on one of the three islands that the Japanese government bought from their private Japanese owners last week.

Quote:
China's national defence minister, Liang Guanglie, said Beijing reserved the right to take further action against Japan over the dispute. It was hoped the countries could reach a negotiated solution, but the Japanese government should "undo its mistakes and come back to the right track of negotiations", he said.

Yawn.

Sorry, Ronnie. I'm just bored with all of it. I'm regretfully developing a "let them kill each other" attitude in my old age. Our country can't play peacemaker forever. The entire world is going to hate us anyway, so what's the upside of getting involved?

Isn't an election going on there? I think it will calm down when the election season is over. tongue

They are both too closely intertwined economically, they wont go to war.

Tommy Shots: They want me running the family, don't they know I have a young wife?
Sal Vitale: (laughs) Tommy, jump in, the water's fine.

India/Pakistan would be the powder keg ready to blow like Mt. St. Helen.

I highly doubt they will expand in each other's immediate neighborhoods, but a rivalry will become increasingly likely as both nations continue to rise economically in the future. Pakistan occupies much of India's immediate foreign concerns, as does Taiwan/North Korea for China.

Agreed. Pakistan is very unstable IMO, hopefully the shit doesn't hit the fan once American troops are out of Afghanistan in 2014.

I know that if U.S. will go defend Japan, then probably Russia will back up China. Aaaaaand it's a WW3.

China has a lot of historical resentments (some fair, some not) and finally has the economic, political (and military??) power to start doing something about them.

Japan has never really taken responsibility or apologized fully for its actions in WW2 and before in China and elsewhere. I think some of their textbooks still claim that they were "invited" into China to deal with bandits. Put those two things together and there's going to be occasional flare ups. But I don't think that war is imminent.

What is interesting is China's claim to virtually the entire South China Sea and even Okinawa. It's hard to tell how serious China is about this but it is obvious bullying and may have the effect of causing nearby countries to band together.

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

If China had to go to war it might slow down their plan to dominate the world simply by making everything in it......

What happens to the Chinese-Japanese combo restaurants here in the city?

Do I have to start ordering sushi from one place and dim sum from another?

Because that would really put me out.
