Paulie was the one told John about the insult that Ralphie made about his wife but yet Johnny just used him and lied to him and why would he do that to Paulie about him that Carmine held him in high regard?...when Paulie met hima nd relazied Carmine didn't even know who he is.

My point it....what is Johnny tried to do? and why would he do that?....

I think Johnny was using Paulie's need to be in favor against him. Paulie appeared to be desperate and Johnny played him like a violin to make him think Carmine would welcome him in the NY family if Paulie wanted. Johnny just used Paulie for info plain & simple - IMO.

Agree with Mark. I think that this also showed that "friendship" in the mafia doesn't really mean anything. There are no true friends; only convenient mutually beneficially relationships. When one party ceases to be relevant to the other, it's go time...

Paulie was in a weak state and John knew he had insight into the construction deals that John needed. That was why Johnny lied to Paulie and Paulie fed Johnny other information as well. Johnny used Pualie plain and simple. Invoking Carmines's name was just a cherry on top for John to have Paulie opening his mouth.

In addition to what was said above, Johnny Sack lead Paulie to believe that they may remove Tony and install Paulie as boss. At one point, Johnny tells Paulie, "There may be a change". Paulie responds, "I'm only trying to bring good will between the families, as I always do and always will.....whether it's me in charge, god forbid, or whoever." (that's not an exact quote but it's close.) Johnny is tricking Paulie into believing that New York may want to install him as boss, thus buying Paulie's loyalty. Later Paulie realizes he was simply tricked into revealing Soprano family secrets.

Johnny Sac was s slick, treacherous, streetwise guy. By keeping Paulie on the string, not only did he have a stream of useful info, but he also had a guy who would have done anything to step into Tony's place.
I believe that Johnny had several contingency plans to insure his elevation to Boss.

One of them may have been "Paulie wants to be the new Soprano Boss, and he's enough of a backstabbing, selfish prick to kill Tony if he thinks Carmine will back him for the big seat. As stupid as he is,if I can get him to betray Tony, then I'll whack Carmine and maybe Brainless the Second, and become the Boss of two Families".

From Paulie's conversation with Johnny,I get the feeling that while he way have drawn the line at actually killing Tony himself,he would not have interfered with a Lupertazzi based hit. He would have kept his mouth shut, let Tony get killed, and then after becoming the new Boss(in his mind),would counsel the Soprano Family to make peace and accept Tony's death as strictly business, not personal.

Then as the newly anointed Boss,he would usher in a Golden Age of prosperity and co-operation with the Sacrimoni Family and go down as a great Don.

This is how nuts I believe Paulie was.

Paulie as Boss would have been a disaster, look how he handled the Lawn Cutting Business. He very nearly got Ralphie killed over BS...With the amount of jabbering he does, the Feds wouldn't need a wiretap.

Funny reference. I prefer to think that Paulie moved slow, because his brain was barely functional enough to power his legs.

Johnny Sack had done the same thing with Ralphie in Season 3, particularly after Ralphie killed Tracee. Johnny was feeding a line to Ralphie that Tony wanted to talk, when Tony had no real interest in doing so. Then Johnny turns around and feeds Tony a line about promoting Ralphie to capo (but posing it as Ralphie's idea rather than his own). In the end, Ralphie winds up getting promoted and proves himself to be a good earner on the Esplanade project, so Johnny had to go find another weak link in the Jersey family.

Of course, it's not to say that Johnny was being used from time to time -- Tony/Hesh used him when Junior wanted to tax Hesh $500K, and Junior used Johnny when Tony/Gigi wanted to have Bobby Bacala, Sr. make the Mustang Sally hit.

Then he freaks out, figures he has to kick up some cash quickly, and has to rob (and kill) Minn Matrone to do so.

Not the best thought out plan there, Paulie.

Do you think Paulie's mother would answer the phone at night, especially after what Ralphie did?
