Just today, I recieved a letter from Maurice Chambers and Solicitors. A lawyer by the name of Barrister Edward Samuel tells me that he needs my help in order to free up 15.000,000 US dollars that belonged to a healthy businessman, deceased in the Tsunami tragedy some years ago. His last will was to give this money to any living relative of his. Apparently the lawyer has been looking for a very long time but haven´t found any relative of the deceased.
Now, this lawyer wants me to show up and act as the only still living relative in order to claim the money. We would split the money 50/50. But of course, there´s a catch. He needs me to send money to him so that he can bribe some officials "in power" so that this "operation" will run smoothly.

Now, I wasn´t born yesterday so I know what´s going on. I found the "lawyer´s" name on this webpage,

http://www.consumerfraudreporting.org/namesusedinscams.php

warning people for scams like this.
But I´m thinking...why not have a little fun with the dude, and let him taste his own medicine? I could tell him that my spending money is freezed, and the ony way to free up my money is to bribe a bank teller so that I can withdraw money from my freezed bank account. So I would actually need him to send me money. Lol, wouldn´t that be great?

Have any of you experienced anything like this scam attempt?

I have, Hairy. But mine came with a 6 inch increase in penis size and a $25 Amazon coupon.

I don't like to shop online, but my pants finally fit.

There are many variations to the Nigerian scam.

Two scams that are going around now involve winning a vacation cruise to the Bahamas where all you have to pay is $250 in taxes and boarding fees. It comes with a gift certificate for going to meet them. The agency is Sundance Travel.

An older one involves a call from the "Drug Agency" claiming there is a search warrant for your residence because of an allegation of buying overseas prescriptions illegally. They leave a number for you to call where they make plans for you to wire money to avoid the warrant and charges.

Keep in mind that law enforcement has never telephoned anyone to say they had a search warrant.

I see about 1/2 dozen of these per month in my work spam e-mail. My employer email receives about 2 millions spam email per week. There must be some people who fall for these scams. Either that or they're sending away to make their genitals larger....

I once got an email from an old friend.... a childhood friend with whom I kept in touch with. The email said he had been in England and was held up at gunpoint and robbed of all his money and passport and documents. He asked if I could wire him some money. I KNEW it was fake.... this friend of mine was the toughest kid I ever knew.... he went on to become a detective sergeant in the City's toughest precinct and he was much decorated while in the Marines before he became a cop. Besides... a gun isn't used that much in British crimes, is it?

Anyway, I emailed him back asking something that only the two of us would know.... he returned the email a few days later after he found that his account had been hacked and was traced to Nigeria.

Turns out this is another kind of scam that is popular in Nigeria.

KlY I got that call about the sundance..or actually it was Spirit Incentives or something for timeshares...THe girl called me and said I won a vacation from an entry I filled out at a flyers game. My friends were like that's bolshit they just send you a free gift card.. but I actually went though with the thing didn't take the cruise.. They gave me options of vegas, dc, san diego, and miami...So I went down to North Miami..They did however keep like a one hundred dollar deposit or they said it was used to pay taxes and stuff like that. They have an office in KOP and they have real aggressive sales people. I listened to everything they had to say, and I think some of the people there watching the 30 in stupid movie were "shills" or whatever they call it. So i got 3 days and 2 nights in a decent hotel in delco art district..its funny because they schedule you for a late flight..then the last day and early flight,,so basically you have one day...They had all kinds of upgrade packages so I could of stayed longer it was for me one guest. But if I had to do it again, I would've just paid for my trip and been on my time and not their time.

Me and my friend that's an attorney went over to my to my friends house just the other day to hang out. ( I had brought this up on the ladies thread but ironically this thread came up today.

Our one friend who is a bit naive, recently signed up for match.com. He showed us the pictures of the girl that he was talking to from match.com and she was attractive hands down, but didn't not that spam porn star look that's obvious. Basically he had been chatting with her on gmail or yahoo messenger, and she had made up sob stories. The lack of morality is ridiculous about losing her family in a car accident, being hurt in the past by guys cheating on her, and even using the money to help the children. She claimed she was currently in West Africa, doing modeling and helping with a children s orphanage. ...My friend had talked to her(or it) for a week...Then the girl said she was coming back to the area within the next month.. She asked if she could have borrow money to buy tampons because she was on her period...and to send the money Western Union..by this time he caught on....She was like the money needs to be sent to hotel manager it was Lagos Nigeria..She never did ask an amount, said she wasnt getting paid till the end of the month or something like that...The info that she had mailed him said the person name and their favorite color or however WU works .He emailed me the chat log... Here the girl blocks him on match so the messenger service wasn't tied to match so she can continue her scam...I thought it was pretty petty and low for someone to go into all that detail, to scam money out of someone... I bet there is a whole syndicate of girls/men/or whatever that do that. My friend was down in the dumps, for a few days, almost like he was in denial that he was about to get scammed. So like any good friend would do when we went out the other night, and stopped at a strip club for a little bit, I bought him a lap dance haha

Also known as '419 scams', so named after the relevant article of the Nigerian Criminal Code (yep, that's a thing)

There's a hilarious article floating around the interwebz where this guy stsrted a correspondance with his scammer. They sent emails back and forth for months, with the scammer eagerly believing that he was getting closer and closer to getting money out of the guy. In the meantime, the supposed 'scam-ee' weaved this huge backstory about how his he'd recently come into a large sum of money but had broken up with his gay lover and had no one to share it with. Eventually he told the scammer he had fallen in love with him, and asked to meet him so he could give him the money in person. He never heard from the guy again.

If I can find it, Ill post it. It's high-larious.

Unbelievable.

Though, in actuality, it's all too believable.

The FBI used to have an e-mail address where one could forward all this scam garbage, but it was discontinued a few years ago - proving, as I see it, that our government simply doesn't give a damn.

As I advance more and more into middle age, I confess I've become so cynical that I would never sign up for an online dating service, or anything like that. Too many scammers out there. Also, I'm a bit old-fashioned - I prefer face-to-face interaction with people as far as that goes.

Yeah, there's a sucker born every minute.

I do find amusement, though, in reading stories on the Internet of how people occasionally scam the scammers. Poetic justice, IMO. grin

There's also US Green Card scams asking for money to get you a green card. They use logos of Immigration and Naturalization service. I usually don't even read these emails, but was really surprised how stupid some could be. A coworker of mine had gotten an email of these sort a couple of years back. He had recently become engaged and all he could think about was how to get rid of his fiancee. rolleyes

He was giddy and had said this to half a dozen people at work, and finally when came to ask me what to do, since I'm such an expert grin , I showed him the actual site, the fact that they wouldn't contact anyone via email and that people should beware of such scams. Honestly, he asked if I'm sure like 20 times. Then said I'd squashed all his dreams. rolleyes That figures. lol

Yeah! That´s what I´m talking about. Why not have a little fun with these scammers and teach them a lesson?
In my case, I recieved an actual letter, not an email. So they have my home address which could prove problematic because they would know where to find me. And you just never know what these scammers are capable of doing.

When I worked for Pitney Bowes, I was contacted by a Nigerian man. He was in a lovely house with an office in the basement. He said he had a newsletter that he sent to other Nigerians and needed a mailing machine. He bought everything top of the line and gave us a $10,000 down payment (it bounced). Eventually, we repossessed the machine, after he used it for a few months. When we went back to the house/office, it was bare and the landlord was there. He had been ripped off, too. This was back in the mid 1980s, so obviously it's not a new thing with the Nigerians.

Yes, he kept saying that he was going to get a Letter of Credit from Nigeria to pay for it. Never happened.

We keet getting phone calls that just come up International and are basically from Asia somewhere(India,Pakistan or Bangladesh) and you get a little fellow telling you your computer is broken and if you send this fellow money and your bank account details it will be sorted!!!!

Right uhwhat

Needless to say said little fellow gets sent on his way with a few well chosen words and now we have blocked the number. Pesky little buggers they were though, they used to ring every day even after they had just been blasted.....
