Definitely targeted, planned, and an overweight white male was also wounded, wheeled out in front of the cameras with a tshirt covering his face

Celebrating Italian heritage and sportsmanship...just to be reminded of one of Italy's oldest plagues: OC.

Thanks for updating us Montague, hopefully this won't turn into a new Montreal.

Is it bad that I thought the same thing when I saw the article?

I'll be honest, I did some looking about and nothing confirms that this has any linking to any Mob activity but there is still a nagging piece of my mind that suggests maybe it really was a Mob hit because the fact that the person was reportedly in a Construction uniform. I'm not up to date on any recent Mob hits but something tells me that most aren't done in public a lot anymore and that they don't usually wear disguises.

But you also have to factor in that the Italy game was on and that some kind of argument could have taken place which resulted in the death and injury.

We'll just have to wait and see.

I've read a couple of more articles as the story develops and I now doubt that this is mob related. Too many people around, too many things could have gone wrong...or they picked a very good hit man.

Still, let's wait and see.

Unfortunately we probably still won't know much. Canadian Media and the Police are notorious for sugar coating major events and holding back on details so I wouldn't expect them to come right out and say it was a Mob hit if it was.

They'll definitely be wary to post anything especially after the Eaton Centre shooting two weeks ago.

EDIT: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/toro...article4330824/

Here's a link to an article that suggests it was a targeted hit and that the victim was known as John or "Little John" in the area. He drove a lot of fancy cars.

Definitely not from an argument, his costume alone shows premeditation as opposed to heat of the moment.

EDIT
So sorry Antimacy, didnt read your second post close enough there, thank you for that link!

EDIT
More info (I want to avoid Spam Posting)The locals seem to sharing what this was all about...
From the Toronto Sun
"Some residents, who didn’t want their names used, said the victim, whose first name is apparently “Johnny”, was well-known in Little Italy and may have had ties to organized crime.

They describe the shooting as a “public hit” by a Mafia hitman that was carried out on a day when most Italians were watching their national team play soccer in Little Italy.

“They (Mafia) wanted to send a message,” one man said. “They know everybody will be here watching the game.” "

Little Italy shooting victim had gang links
Vidya Kauri, Kristin Annable and Adrian Humphreys
National Post Staff
Jun 18, 2012 – 11:15 PM ET

TORONTO — The victim of a deadly afternoon shooting on a patio in Toronto’s Little Italy during a Euro 2012 soccer match was a former member of an outlaw motorcycle gang, leading police to probe whether the motive was a mob-linked attack or a national sporting rivalry, sources say.

[snip]

The gunman apparently disguised as a construction worker, including hat, safety vest and white filter mask, possibly as a way to get close to the victim with his face obscured but without drawing attention or sending a warning.

Sources say the 35-year-old Portuguese victim had been a member of the Loners Motorcycle Club, but had retired from the club at some point. The club is an outlaw biker gang founded in 1979 that has since been eclipsed by more powerful and larger gangs. The victim had a long association with bikers and maintained a “flashy lifestyle,” police said.

[snip]

Police are not naming the victim, but sources say he lived on Crawford Street in a residence registered to a John and Michelle Raposo. No one at the address Monday would answer questions....

More details are emerging about the murder victim, John Raposo.

Little Italy shooting victim had lengthy criminal record, court records show

The man identified by sources as the victim of a “targeted” shooting in Little Italy Monday afternoon had an extensive police record dating back some 15 years and was facing assault and dangerous driving charges at the time of his death, court records show.

Police have not released his name, but sources close to the family and neighbourhood acquaintances said John Raposo, 35, was the man gunned down on the patio of a College Street café while crowds gathered to watch Italy defeat Ireland in a Euro Cup playoff game.

A man with the same name and date of birth as Mr. Raposo had long been entangled with the justice system, court records show. His record dated as far back as 1997, when he would have been 21 years old.

He was set to appear in court on July 3 for an assault charge. He had a further court date on December 21 of this year to stand trial on a charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and a provincial traffic act violation....

Well the reports have been coming in at a steady pace. Not only was the cafe known to be a popular hang out for local mafioso, the victim was also known for links to traditional organized crime. That's what Canadian authorities call the Italian mafia.
They are saying now that the victim was friends with Eddie Melo. Anyone from around the GTA with a mob interest will know that name. The former boxer who had the nickname The Hurricane was once known to chaperone famous mobsters from Toronto and Montreal around the city, doubling as a bodyguard and strong-arm man. He was shot dead outside a sports bar in Mississauga in 2001. Eddie Melo was also Portuguese, like the victim.
Word is that yesterday's victim played a similar role with Italian gangsters in the city, and may have been involved in a recent coke deal gone wrong.
EDIT
I forgot to mention, the victims name was John Raposo, 35.

The minute I heard that the gunmen was allegedly wearing construction equipment my first thought was that it was mob related. You just never associate the mob with Toronto too much, you always think Hamilton or Montreal (at least in Canada).

Eddie Melo was a driver for Frank Cotroni whenever he visited Ontario.

Victim in Little Italy shooting had ‘big’ gambling debts: source

His neighbours describe him as a friendly family man, but the victim of the brazen shooting outside a Little Italy ice-cream shop had a gambling habit and big debts, a police source said.

John Raposo, 35, was known as a “big shooter” in the gambling world, said the source, who is familiar with his history.

“He bet big and lost big,” the source said.

Mr. Raposo had recently placed wild bets on sports games with major underworld gambling operations and owed a significant amount of money, he said. Many of the city’s illicit gambling operations have ties to powerful figures in the local Mafia.

Mr. Raposo was shot dead while watching a soccer match on the patio of the Sicilian Sidewalk Café on Monday afternoon. Another man was wounded and is expected to recover.

The gunman disguised himself as a construction worker before opening fire, shooting Mr. Raposo in the head, and fleeing the scene.

Floral tributes rested outside the café Tuesday, while tables and chairs remained strewn around the blood-stained patio.

Excerpts below are from one of the better articles published, assuming the police intelligence is accurate and Peter Edwards's OMG sources were knowledgeable -- he wrote a book about the 2006 massacre of the Bandidos in Shedden, Ontario. Incidentally, other articles have now confirmed that the second victim who survived was not targeted -- he was shot accidentally.

Little Italy shooting: Search goes on for café killer

[snip]

The victim, John Raposo, 35, had a history of run-ins with the law and flirted with the idea of joining a downtown crew of the Loners Motorcycle Club in the 1990s, but never followed through with it.

[snip]

The second victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police say. His name has not been released by police.

Raposo also had numerous scrapes with the law, although well-placed sources said he wasn’t a member of the Mafia or an outlaw biker club.

[snip]

Three GTA men connected to outlaw bike clubs say that Raposo should not be confused with Luis Manny (Chopper) Raposo, a former member of the Bandidos Motorcycle Club who lived in the same neighbourhood. Luis Raposo was murdered in April 2006, alongside seven other men connected to the Bandidos Motorcycle Club.

Luis Raposo had no brothers or relatives in the club and John Raposo was never a full member of the Loners or Bandidos, a former Bandido said.

“The only Raposo I knew was Chopper, and he obviously is not with us any longer,” said another former biker acquaintance of Luis Manny Raposo.

John Raposo briefly entertained the thought of joining the club when he was in his late teens, when he was friends with a longtime Loner known as “Joe the Meatman,” who worked as a butcher. “He was one of his (Joe the Meatman’s) guys downtown,” a former Loner said.

Only a few old-timers in the club still recall John Raposo, the former Loner said.

“He never ended up joining the club,” the former Loner said. “There was no animosity towards him.”

A GTA police officer who specializes in organized crime said John Raposo also wasn’t considered a member of what police call “traditional organized crime” or TOC.

“There’s nothing TOC that I have on him,” the Mafia specialist said....

UPDATE: CP24 is saying that Police have confirmed an arrest in the Little Italy shooting.

This afternoon, 10 police cars with up to 30 police officers (witnesses state) swarmed a black taxi-van and pulled a tall, white male from the taxi and arrested him. Also taken away in handcuffs was the taxi driver.

A CP24 reporter says she saw what looked like multiple sports bags full in the back of the Taxi.

Witnesses have been reported as saying that with that amount of Police presence that they knew something big was to happen.

The arrest took place 12 minutes away from where the shooting took place.

No other Media is reporting the arrest currently besides CP24. I can update regularly when more information is available.

www.cp24.com to watch the arrest video yourselves.

Canadian law enforcement knows what they're doing, but often they aren't doing much. But whenever they have too, they act with efficiency.

Police have updated what CP24 had previously mentioned.

Dean Wiwchar, 26, of British Columbia, was arrested today in connection with the death of 35-year-old John Raposo. Dean Wiwchar will appear in court tomorrow to face a charge of first-degree murder in connection with death of 35-year-old John Raposo. Shooting suspect Dean Wiwchar was not known to police.

A reporter asked if Wiwchar was wearing a wig because initial eyewitnesses had said that the shooter had blonde hair. The arrest video showed Wiwchar with dark hair.

They also stated that he does have some connection with Toronto but did not elaborate on what connection.

More will come I imagine.
