Red herring i reckon, it was probably mainly put to show how superstiuous and partially paranoid Paulie was at times.

I reckon because the cat was staring at Christopher during Clever's making it could be a warning that Tony would be killed like the mobsters in Clever and his arrogance thinking he was safe while Paulie suspected something

Other mysteries with Walnuts include the scene with the Ghost Whisperer and whatever happened to Valery out in the Pine Barrens.

Posted this elsewhere, but i got my theories about that cat being a symbol of death...

We all know David Chase used symbols and metaphors throughout the Sopranos, and I think there's more than enough of these in Made In America alone to rationally come to the conclusion that Tony is murdered at the end.

But i was also thinking that in Paulie's last scene, Chase is setting Paulie up for death.

Firstly he's inherited the Aprile/Cifaretto crew. As Paulie points out, everyone who ran that crew died early. It was effectively a 'doomed crew'.

Secondly, and more symbolically, the cat. The cat spends all its time staring at Christopher's picture and Paulie seems to believe its because the cat can sense Chris is dead. After Paulie reluctantly accepts the role of Aprile/Cifaretto crew capo he looks sad, and the camera cuts to a wide shot of him sitting alone outside Satriales. At that moment the cat enters the shot, lays down and starts staring at Paulie. The cat can sense Paulie's imminent death now too....

I think it was just to show that Paulie is superstitious, same with the 3 o'clock thing and him being haunted. Just a creepy little thing to make you wonder.

I'm agreeing with this. I don't believe it was Adriana, it was just a way of showing that Paulie was fucked once he took over that crew.

I think its a supersition. My whole family hates cats and that came from my grandmom who was off the boat. She always said they were evil. I know others whose grandparents said the same thing back in the day.
