Not really an 'Organised' Crime topic, except maybe for the fact Capone did some time in Alcatraz as well, but last night it was exactly 50 years since three guys famously escaped from Alcatraz.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/10/us/ann...;pagewanted=all

Always loved the movie when I was a kid, and only later found out it was based on true events.

Although they were declared dead by the FBI, who were probably embarrassed, the United States Marshal's Service is still investigating the case, and will do so until the escapees reach the supposed age of 100 years. Also, the guys from Mythbusters proved it was possible they made it.

So, what do guys think? Did they drown that very night or did they make it to the shore?

I think they made it. They were not going to do all this effort only to drown in the end. I'm sure that after they succeeded to escape the eagerness to be free is what brought them ashore.

Pizzaboy, I was in your neighborhood yesterday running some errands with a relative. Stopped by Emilia's restaurant for lunch and had some Chicken Due Funghi which was great. Then stopped in La Cantina to stock up on a few wines. I wanted to head into Mario's but it was packed with customers.

Tommy Shots: They want me running the family, don't they know I have a young wife?
Sal Vitale: (laughs) Tommy, jump in, the water's fine.

I was at Mount Carmel right around lunchtime, Dapper. Tomorrow is the Feast of Saint Anthony (the feast itself was last week, but the actual feast date is always on June 13th). Anyway, I stopped by to light a candle. I was also at the Arthur Avenue Market yesterday. I stopped by to talk to a friend.

It's really a small world. We may have actually passed each other on the street smile.

Small world indeed. smile I was in the area celebrating the successful sale of my godfather's business (bodega/deli) the previous week.

I was particularly surprised at the number of people shopping and buying in the area. It has always been a lively area, but now some streets were jampacked with more people than I previously remembered. Tons of students/tourists, guess I have been away at school too long. Good to see the area is doing great.

No amigo, we called our game football looooong before you guys took rugby, changed the rules and called it 'American Football'. Only Americans call the most popular game in the world 'soccer', and man did I have my share of discussions on this subject in the US wink .

Bullshit, they call it soccer also in the UK. We don't play the sport because it makes even baseball look boring, and at least baseball has stats, odds, building of tension and bench clearing brawls.

Soccer should only be played by the poor, and often shoeless

"Soccer" is a Commonwealth thing, "football" is a Euro thing

lol lol lol You really are completely clueless. Even on this board they have this thread:

http://www.gangsterbb.net/threads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=426311#Post426311

Notice that it doesn't say English 'soccer' thread.

If you don't know what you are talking about, keep quiet. England invented football, Americans took rugby, changed the rules and called it 'american football'. It's well documented history.

As to only the poor playing it...it's the biggest sport in the world. From rich to poor, not that this should matter.

I like to think they made it. Interesting story about Morris being so smart...and locked up. lol

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

Same sentiments here Lilo, I like to think they spend their remaining days in Mexico or where ever.

No I am English and its football not soccer. Let me weigh into this as I like American sports like NFL and I watch football (soccer) too, football can be very boring I agree, 1-0, or 0-0, a waste of 90mins to me. I love NFL but at times its frustrating how stop start it all is so all sports have their flaws, no need hating on each others.

Exactly. If you enjoy it or not is a matter of opinion, but its definitely football and not soccer, also in the UK.

Anyhow, fifty years ago, the English brothers and Morris escaped from Alcatraz.

I'm guessing they're dead.

The story reminded me a little of D.B. Cooper. Someone I'd like to think is still kicking and enjoying his ill-gotten gains somewhere under a phony name, but who's probably as dead as Caesar.

Very nice to support you argument and specifically do a search on soccer vs. football, albeit only posting one and going back nearly 5 years before either one of us registered here.

But I'm going off this map smartass, which details how Commonwealth Nations who still call it soccer:

In the States, only kids who couldn't succeed in football play rugby out here, it's almost as douchey as lacrosse.

Soccer is also great for the poor as all you need is a ball. Though that does not entirely clear up the argument of soccer being a sport for immigrants those un-Americanized

Football players wouldn't last 10 minutes in Rugby and I'm an NFL fan, there fitness isn't up to it 40 mins each way no breaks, and you might want to try it before you judge it because your playing with no padding at all.

Yeah. That thread is still up to date today, do your homework, besides that there are a million examples for football not being called soccer outside the US. Do your homework and don't be a smartass, you really have no idea what you're talking about. Read something for a change and maybe someday you won't be totally ignorant lol.

I'm not talking about which sport is 'better', I'm just saying nobody calls it soccer in the rest of the world.

It's not about soccer being called football outside of the United States, it's about soccer being called soccer in Commonwealth Nations. Even the Afrikaans word describes it as "soccer". I'd figure it'd be easier for you to understand, you being Dutch and all.

All this started with you claiming they call football 'soccer' in the UK. Which they don't. Ask anyone from the UK. They've been calling it football since the the Middle Ages.

It's funny because I have had these discussions before. The word football comes from Europe. Then the US invented 'American Football', great sport BTW, and started calling the original football 'soccer'. Fine by me. Just don't be surprised if the rest of the world keeps calling football football.

Now you go look for another online picture from Africa or whatever, and I'll go take care of my massive hangover, the one I have from watching the biggest football match in two years last night.

I have to agree with Chopps. All of Europe call the game "football". The game started overhere (Europe) and when the game later spread to Africa, some few African countries (I think Nigieria being one of them) started to call it "soccer" so that the game would not be confused with "American football", a sport that had been established allready in America.

There is a funny saying about football (soccer) and rugby, by the way: "Rugby is a hooligan´s sport for gentlemen, while football (soccer) is a gentleman´s sport for hooligans."

The whole of Europe (and that includes Great Britain and Ireland) call it football. Whatever you guys call it down there is of little importance to us.
