Happy Memorial Day everyone. Since today is the day we honor those who have served our country, I started thinking about which Gangsters served and were vets. It makes you wonder if the discipline and training helped any of these guys once they got out and returned to a life of crime.

Guys that come to mind are:

Sammy the bull Gravano (Army)
Dominick Montiglio (Green Berets)
Henry Hill (Army)

Any others?

Best way to catch the smart ones? Get an idiot working for them.

Venero Frank "Benny Eggs" Mangano comes to mind. He served in WOII as a tail gunner and has the medals to prove it.

The late Genovese soldier, Carlo Mastrototaro, from Massachusetts also served in WWII.

Ron Previte was in, but never saw service and IIRC was lucky to avoid a dishonorable discharge (been a while since I read The Last Gangster)

Wiseguys mentions that Paul Vario's brother Tuddy served in the Korean War and was wounded.

How come John Gotti and Roy Demeo didnt serve?
Sammy Gravano got drafted and they were both about Sammys age.

IIRC Sammy was in to avoid jail, and Gotti was a draft dodger who was eventually just dropped for having a criminal record.

-Frank Sheeran spent 411 combat days as an Army Rifleman in WWII. Fucking guy probably killed more people than the plague.

-Stevie Flemmi was a paratrooper in Korea. I think he was highly decorated too.

-Allen Dorfman was a Marine in WWII. He was at Iwo Jima and got a Silver Star

More recently Richard Greaves(Colombos) and Randy Pizzolo(Bonnanos) were both Marines.

Didn't Roy's older brother get killed during the Korean War? That alone would make Roy want to skipout on Vietnam.

If I'm not mistaken (and I might be), I believe Rick Cowan mentioned in his book "Takedown", that "Jimmy Brown" Failla was a Paratrooper in WWII.

I wouldnt blame Roy for not wanting to go but why wasnt he drafted like many were?
Did the draft only pick on certain people?

Johnny "Green" Faraci (Bonanno member) and George Barone (Genovese member and later turncoat) both served in the WWII.
