So far my holiday weekend has been working around the yard and pool. Scrubbed down a lot of patio furniture while my kids pulled weeds and did some grunt work. My electric hedge trimmer broke after almost 20 years of service, so I bought a replacement, and plan to go nuts with it tomorrow morning.

In a few hours we'll be going to a friend's house where we'll we'll enjoy a great food and drinks with very good people. Tomorrow after morning trimming, a few friends will stop by and I'll do steaks and chicken on the grill.

And don't forget to contribute to the VA hospitals this weekend.

I just got back from a BBQ at my daughter/SIL's house. Hamburgs/Hotdogs and all the fixins'. It is a beautiful day today, however NOT hot like it usually is on Memorial Day. Maybe mid to hi 70's. Anyway hope you all enjoy your long weekend and drive safely.

Bank Holiday? They should work 6 days a week and the 6th day should be for free; greedy, blood-sucking scumb.

Just got back from a four day weekend in "the Valley" klyd. Ate a bunch of Sabbatini's pizza. The only pizza I could eat before bed and not have indigestion. Worked Fri/Sat/Sun at my in-laws florist. Ate lots of junk food and beer (not junk food).

For those who may not know Memorial Day was origninally Decoration Day to commemorate the dead of the Civil War. In the early 20th century it became a day for the dead of all wars.

The weather was so strange here! On Saturday and Sunday, it was sunny and gorgeous and then, out of the blue, the wind would pick up and the clouds would roll in. We had thunder and lightning and lots of people lost power. However, today was just sunshine all day. We enjoyed grilling and swimming, and between our friends, and friends of the girls, I literally dished up dozens of meals.

It was wonderful. And thanks to the men and women who sacrificed their lives so that we would be free.

My oldest boy was in Pittston Wednesday, playing basketball with a couple buddies from college, and they stopped at Sabbatini's for a lkate lunch before he came home. I was disappointed he didn't bring home a couple of trays.

We had the same weather Sunday and Monday. I was at a party yesterday with plenty of sunshine, but before 8 pm the skies darkened, the winds roared and all hell broke loose.

Today was hot and sunny. I trimmed about 70 shrubs and bushes around the house and cooked on the grill. As we did most of the cooking early with burgers, chicken and sausages, I never got around to my steaks, which had been marinating. I threw them in the feezer til next weekend.

Since the pool's been open, we've been grilling like fiends, even with all the rain we've had. Or I should say, I marinate, Mr. Babe grills. Today was ribs that I dry-rubbed this morning. Yesterday was good old burgers and dogs, and Saturday I marinated some loin lamb chops in soy sauce, red wine and rosemary (or, as one of my daughter's friends asked, "Why does the meat have pine needles on it?" LOL). In the past 8 days, we've had people here for dinner 5 of the 8. I'm exhausted. Someone else better be cooking for me tomorrow!

At least I was smart enough to make enough macaroni and potato salad on Saturday morning to last the whole weekend!

We actually were laughing about that yesterday! My daughter: "And Dad saw double for like six days! That was funny!"

I don't think you Brits do--but our long weekend in May is centered around Queen Victoria. I think it's simply because she was the Queen that granted Canada's Confederation.

Oli, I'm guessing even those of us who are not veterans have many family members, friends who were. For me, my father, several uncles and my ex-husband are all vets.

We honor them all!!!!!

Did anybody do anything fun over the holiday weekend?

Saturday was my oldest's twentieth birthday. He and I went out for some outstanding barbecue on Friday for lunch as he worked most of the weekend. My wife and I also attended a fun graduation party.

I baked my son a cake, and he received two others from girls he knows. If you add the cake from the graduation party, I ate more cake this past weekend than I did in the last year combined.

The cool weather was great for a lot of yard work as we're preparing for a graduation party ourselves for my younger son later in June. I did a lot of work, but hired one of my best friends to do a lot of landscaping to finish the yard off nicely.

Yum, cake! Will you save me at least one piece? Congrats to your son's birthday. Officially out of his teens now!

We had plans that involved a barbecue and swimming, neither of which happened. It's supposed to heat up here tomorrow and stay hot through the weekend, so I'm hoping we get a swim in this weekend.

I went to a street fair. After a half hour, I noticed something, no American flags. Not one, anywhere, at stands, or in overflowing cafes and bars. I had good time but wish people would remember what the holiday is about.
