My sources are the NYPost, NYDailynews, Friends of Ours, Google News, Gangsterbb, and Real Deal forum.

Ivy, have you ever thought about writing a book on any OC topic/individual? There is not a topic that I have come across that you haven't been able to provide any insightful information.

Side note: Just recently I moved my blog over to a .com address to make it easier to get to. Now the new address is www.fivefamiliesnyc.com alternatively, www.fivefamiliesnyc.blogspot.com will also work.

Tommy Shots: They want me running the family, don't they know I have a young wife?
Sal Vitale: (laughs) Tommy, jump in, the water's fine.

Thanks. I like reading and writing but I really don't know if there's anything original I could offer. My thing is just sort of sifting through all the info in an effort to get at the truth. But I guess a lot of mob books are essentially that - info taken from other books, taken from other books, etc. If I ever did, it would probably be something about the modern day mob. Like from 2000 to the present. No use in going back further since all of that has been hashed and rehashed and done to death.

Nearly every site I use to keep track of and read up on American LCN has been posted already. Although I dont think I've seen Mary Ferrel posted yet. A great historical site. And DapperDon's blog makes a good starting point as an archive old news articles.

The forums are also a great way to keep up to date. This one, Real Deal and the old Gangsters Inc site hosted by Tripod.

I would so read that. Im waiting for a Five Families update, since that seems to go up to about '05 and lots of stuff has happened since then. Something covering things like the extended Gotti Jr trials, Tommy Shots' case, Mafia Takedown Day, etc would be great.

You're right about so much mob. lit being simple collations of many others. As was mentioned on the other forum, books can take you only so far in independant research. The Australian OC stuff Im working on is a prime example (though understandably not as interesting to everyone) where a handful of books repeat the same inaccuracies again and again, leading back to one early authors mistake. Contempory news articles, obituaries, census and police reports can shed light on certain esoteric matters that are seemingly shrouded in conjecture.

Great thread idea Blade! I am looking forward to looking through several of the links that I have never visited.

I have used Lexis Nexxus, which is a paid subscription legal database, to access a lot of good information. If you are a university student, your school probably has a subscription.

Ivy - you should write a book. While I don't always agree with you (and I am probably wrong), your knowledge of LCN and OC is second to none. I am confidant you would do a terrific job with any topic you choose. I would love to read a good book on the Pizza Connection, the Gas Tax Scam or the Windows Case. These topics really do not have a dedicated book that probes them in depth.

I am just curious, but has anyone ever filed a FoI (Freedom of Information) to get LCN info that is not in the public domain? I have given it some thought, but have never taken the time. I would love to read (and hear tape recordings) information that law enforcement has collected.

Yes, I have done that several times.
The "service" has improved a lot the last years but still the work process can take a pretty long time after you have made a request til you recieve the files.
As you surely know, no request can be made on living people. Generally, the files are better on guys who have been dead for a long time.
They cost 10 cents a page, but if the files are large enough, you´ll get 100 pages for free.

Coincidently I stumbled upon an interesting website about organized crime in America which covers many topics along with maps.

seems like a good site with solid info on drug trafficing organizations, but some of the info on mob related topics seems suspect, case in point:

http://www.panamericancrime.com/?q=conte...mafias-collapse

"Their membership was as large as any of the NY mafia families as was their wealth"

"The cosa nostra in Montreal today is extensive, maintaining at least 200 “made” members, but most likely more, with at least one thousand supporting associates."

i know that its been harder to gauge the # of members in montreal, but this takes the cake. maybe the author of this article is from chicago

My favorite was the claim made in Quitting the Mob - the book about Michael Franzese. The author claimed Franzese's crew of both Italians and Russian associates was as big and wealthy as all five NY families combined. whistle

And keep in mind also, there are FBI files on some of the "boys" in the "Vault". When making a FOIA request, check out if your subject isn´t already there, already available.
When I made a request for Lilo Galante´s files, I was offered the same version that is already on there. So the files will not go through another working process if they are already available in the "Vault".
Seems unnecessary to pay for something you can get for free.

I agree ivy knows everything also great site dapper.
