I always noticed that despite having a sizable Italian population, Baltimore never really had its own LCN family. They've had local mobsters like Lord Solsbury and Little Melvin Williams, but no recognized spot in the American Mafia hierchy. With the ports, industry and infrastructure down there moving through that city, you would think the Mafia would establish a foothold. Was Baltimore run by corrupt political machine with localized criminal organizations (a sort of Irish Mob town)or as satellite city, to say Philly, within the national crime syndicate?

Any MD guys, let me know/

i seem to remember hearing that the bruno family had some guys down there a while ago, like the 60's, but nothing even remotly recently. baltimore just has a different crime culture down there, mainly violent black heroin rings that kill at the drop of a hat.

Yeah, seems that way. Just tough to believe in an industrial port city like that. Hard city for sure. Did see some story about some neighborhood mobster crews down there that sounded to me like the Boston gangs of the early 60s, ragtag neighborhood books and numbers operators out of old bars. Nothing ethnic about them, neither. Just white guy names.

Here's what I have concluded about the city ! Many associates from NY and Phila that did gambling, loansharking etc ! Also the same with Jewish racketeers who also were involved in vending machines/poker machines ! Then we have the red light district which I believe is controlled by NY! To Top it off ,there are many transplants from Naples who own restaurants and pizza shops ! I believe the City is an open town !

The Gambinos had a crew in Baltimore until the early 1990's. The last captain was Frank Corbi.

Corbi died in 1990. The crew was probably not much by that point.

I agree to that.
But isnĀ“t it, at least a little bit, odd that Gravano never mentions Frank Corbi or anything in connection with the Baltimore crew?

Melvin Williams was a beast.....don't let his color throw you off, that was organized crime thru and thru. Man had discipline.

As far as traditional organised crime charlie wilhelm is a good reference point he used to be a gangster in baltimore but became a government informant in 95.

If they have a Baltimore Crime Family my name is Frank Sinatra, lol. No friggin' family from Baltimore. Maybe some NY families operating there, but that's about it.

There's a thread floating around in the archives on this exact question. Basically a Gambino affiliated crew under Corbi circa. 1960. Well gone by now. Also, Stanfa spent some time there working in a pizzeria during the Scarfo years I think it was.

(cough.)
