Probably not. The NYPD cleared 75 homicides and disappearances by attributing them to the DeMeo crew (and that was all of them combined, not just Roy).

The 200 figure seems to come from the hyperbole of Artie Ruffels, who for some reason tries to make DeMeo sound even deadlier than he was (apparently 75 murders isn't enough lol ). In one interview, Ruffels claims the crew killed THREE hundred people. GTFOH Artie!

Not to be outdone by Artie, Dominick Montiglio estimated 500-700 in one interview. No joke.

Wow. Was he drunk or high or something?

A lot of law enforcement types do this - exaggerate the significance of the mobsters they are up against, even if the reality of the mobsters is that they were deadly, powerful, and require no exaggeration to sound formidable. Bill Roemer was pretty bad about it. So is Pistone, with his insistence that there's still an open bounty on his head.

This is one of the weirder phenomena in the history of law enforcement vs organized crime. I call it "gangster inflation". It is very, very silly.

It was during an interview back in the 1990's that Steve Dunleavy did. The tagline was something like, "Meet the Mafia crew who killed more people than were killed in the Gulf War."

I think they say silly numbers like this because of the way in which the crew disposed of the remains and nobody knows for sure an exact figure, so I'd would say it is probably more than 75 but nowhere as high as 200+ .. thats bullshit

Pistone has irritated the hell out of me with that. There is no bounty on his head. I don't think there ever was. The LCN was never going to kill a federal agent. It would be nuts. The only guy Pistone needed to fear, was Lefty. He was really, really pissed of with him and a dangerous man.

Don't get me wrong: what Pistone did was very courageous. But he needs to drop the hat and the sunglasses.

I agree, Lefty has been dead since about 1994 and I cant see anyone wanting to clip an ex-FBI now because he caused the mob a heap of trouble 30 years ago.
All the guys he upset are dead or serving very long sentences

As for Demeo, yeah 200 was an over the top estimate but I can well believe the 75-100 figure.
Was the 75 "official" figure taking into account any side-Jobs Chris, Joey and Anthony may have done themselves without Roy?
These guys were so damn dangerous!

Even thirty years ago, Fat Tony Salerno told FBI agents nothing was going to happen to Pistone or his family.

IIRC, it included every murder/disappearance that could be plausibly linked with the crew members when it was still a crew, but it didn't include the members' later work for the Luccheses.

yeah he's a leader in every sense ... well respected by his guys and feared too, and even more or less walked out of prison in 2002 (I think) and is still on the run, well he is really living well and has a lot of protection and cash - apparently the government (USA/Mexico) is going after him big time and has recently killed one of his top guys - we will have to wait and see how it pans out, I'm sure he wont just stand there like Bin Laden and welcome a few shots from a seal... he will have a few machine guns and go out scarface style baby

Pistone proved there wasn't a bounty on his head when he he visited popular Bonanno hangouts while shooting a documentary. He was called an "f'n rat" and he put on a nervous smile.

I always read that Eddie Lino was an extremely feared guy in the city during his time, but thats all. I don't recall any certain details like hits he did himself or anything like that, just simply that he was one of the most feared and thats supposedly one reason casso and amuso had the cops clip him, also because he was too savvy to get killed by the average hitter

Very interesting question , There's allot of different ways a gig can be brutal , For Example Amuso and Casso ordered hits on women and murdered there's own members in droves,As did Scarfo, Then you have guys who ran families prosperously for decades like Gambino or Profaci who over the course of thier reigns may have killed scores of people all in the name of keeping order, Then you just gave your all out Savages like The Mad Hatter,DeMeo,Sam DeStefano, etc who killed people in droves and is not limited to Italian American criminals, Roy DeMeo was alleged to have killed 200 people? Well in the 80's a Colombian women in Miami killed over 250

Exactly. I don't think anyone in Chicago could top DeMeo, probably, in terms of numbers.

But Spilotro and DeStefano have to be counted among the most cruel.

What they did to Action Jackson was unspeakable--though Gus Russo claims it was because Jackson raped a guy's wife, not because they thought he was a rat.

Spilotro also put some guy's head in a vice.

DeStefano once kidnapped a black guy and forced the guy to have sex with his (DeStafano's) wife.

I don't know if there is a single guy that can be said to be the "most brutal" or more brutal than some others.

The guys that were involved in the William "Action" Jackson murder would be up there. Basically any guys that wanted a guy to suffer rather than just put two in his head.

But maybe the definition could also apply in terms of a total body count. So guys like Roy DeMeo, Nicky Scarfo, Gaspipe Casso, etc. would be up there. To say nothing of the guys back in the day like Anastasia and Genovese.

You can't forget Griselda Blanco, Il Madrina, the godmother of cocaine in Miami in the 80's. Far more ruthless and deadly than many mobsters,by a longshot
