I thought this was an interesting piece. I didn't realize how lightly Scotland is populated compared to the rest of Great Britain. How likely is Scottish independence and what would that mean for the UK?
Will Scotland Go Its Own Way

Quote:
The Breakup of Britain”? It sounds like a fantasy fiction title. To many people across the world, including the English themselves, it is inconceivable that this deep-rooted United Kingdom, the oldest royal democracy in the world, could split apart.

In the last few weeks, however, official London has panicked over the rising clamor of voices from all over the British Isles suddenly agreeing that the archaic structure of “Great Britain” is overdue for a shake-up — even a breakup.

Nowhere are these voices in better harmony than in Scotland. If “Britain” is more than a word on a passport, why do most Scots now feel their primary identity is not British? What would it mean to be English if the Scots walked away? And should the Welsh follow them? A fresh wind of new ideas is blowing from Scotland and tempting all the queen’s subjects to reimagine their identities.

Last month Alex Salmond, Scotland’s first minister and the leader of the Scottish National Party, introduced a “consultation document” on a referendum to decide his nation’s future. After an unexpected triumph in last year’s elections to the Scottish Parliament, the party is now fulfilling its promise: a vote to declare independence.

If Mr. Salmond has his way, the vote will take place in 2014, just shy of 700 years after King Robert the Bruce defeated the English at Bannockburn. And he wants only one question on the ballot paper: “Do you agree that Scotland should be an independent country?”....

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

It'd be interesting to hear Yogi's take on this.

I am English, let me tell you although we are all in Britain, N. Ireland, Wales and Scotland, all those countries hate us! LOL Not in a serious way but in sports and such. I have family in Scotland, most Scots I think would prefer independence, the history going back hundreds of years means they see themselves very separate from English people.

I don't know how i missed this but here i am, better late than never! The Scots are working themselves into a frenzy over this at the moment but i just can't work it out.I understand they want to be Scottish first and foremost, they have their own parliament and such, but why not stay with us and still be Scottish first and British second? I don't see what they would gain by being on their own, whether they like it or not England has all the political and financial clout. We also subsidise them by sending their kids to university for nothing and prescriptions for their medicines. I wonder how keen they are for independence when they are paying 9 grand a year to send their kids to college...in England lol

However as i have often said here, my whole family is Scottish and i live not a kick in the arse away from the border and i know how passionate they are about it just now, so who knows? We will just have to wait and see!

Could be worse....we could be from Europe lol lol

oh my you sound like David Cameron - shame on you, and you got family in scotland too rolleyes - I don't really want to get into a big heated debate about politics but we both know that we (scotland) have been - for lack of a better word Fucked over by English people forever, you have always held the "political and financial clout" and history has proved that "fair" don't come into it, and to go further than that David Cameron can stick his help regarding prescriptions and universities up his tight ass - I'll gladly pay for my kids and family, keep it, I personally would like nothing more than to run my fucking tractor over Mr Cameron's head for a few days, that would be fair I would say ...

I don't know who is worse... mad

Apologies for that outburst there....i got a little feisty myself it appears!!

I know Scotland has no love for the English and can see it from both sides. I will just leave it at that cos these big political debates do my head in. All i want to do is drink beer and watch sport wink

On another note remember when people wanted to see Celtic and Rangers in the Premier League? How would Scots feel about that? Mind you Rangers are in an absolute mess atm!

Rangers really are in the shite....their players have took 75% pay cuts!!!1

Celtic will be loving all this no doubt....yet i'm sure if Rangers did go to the wall Celtic fans would miss the rivalry between these sworn enemies. Maybe they could start a collection up at Parkhead? SAVE THE GERS???

That would go down a storm lol lol

My mum's Scottish so I've got a little Scottish pride in me, though I was born and bread in England. There's a whole debate whether Scotland could survive without English subsidies, though I've heard much of that's a myth. I'm not entirely sure what the economic facts are but I believes the countries have synergy. We have more political clout in the world as Great Britain than we would have individually and that's the main debating point for me.

Quote:
First Minister Alex Salmond has said he wants to face Prime Minister David Cameron in a TV debate on Scottish independence.

The SNP leader was speaking on BBC One's Andrew Marr show from his party's conference in Inverness.

The electorate in Scotland will be asked to vote yes or no to independence in a referendum on 18 September 2014.

Mr Salmond accepted there would be a number of TV showdowns, but he thought the first should be with Mr Cameron.

When asked by interviewer Eddie Mair whether he would debate with pro-union head Alistair Darling, he said: "My first mark is David Cameron the Prime Minister.

"I think as first minister of Scotland I should debate with the prime minister. We signed the Edinburgh agreement. He's against independence - I'm for it...
