Which one do you think is the best one and should have been left in?

They're all good, and as we saw in the Saga version, they all improved the Saga, especially in chronological order.

I have to say that the scene immediately after Connie's wedding, which included the first Vito/Michael dialog and Genco's deathbed, was the most informative for the developing story line. Neri ousting Klingman and bossing the showgirls was very entertaining.

Especially the scene with Neri because it showed just how powerful the Mafia was in LV during that period.

Two scenes:

1. After Vito is shot Michael enters the house and immediately notices that Tom Hagen's wife is sitting on a couch unattended, and next to Clemenza and others (Tom was being held by Solozzo). He goes to her and helps her to a more private part of the house more suitable, considering heer status.

2. In GFII the scene where it shows Fabrizzio'scar blow up and then the shot of Michael getting the news and saying "Finally."

Of course, I think the greatest tragedy of the Trilogy is how all of Manolo's scenes were deleted.

I actually thought most of the deleted scenes were weak when compared to the theatrical versions of the film. They do flesh out a lot of stuff, and I do believe that it played well in the Saga. But a lot of stuff was not needed and would have hampered the pace of the film(s).

My favorites are of Frankie Five Angels. More Gazzo is always a good thing.

I do have to say, I hope that one day they release the trilogy in chronological order with all these deleted scenes.

I'm interested to see the scenes between the Rosato brothers and Frankie. A picture I've shown previously on this board proves that these scenes were in fact shot, but kept out of all the versions. Maybe they are irrelevent, or just very bad, I don't know.

You know I just figured out how Michael Corleone had so much political influence and the ability to have the SEC go for the acquisition of Immobiliare.....MANOLO had long since resigned from the Corleone family and had gone to work for Nixon.

I am reading the Part II script on IMDB and it contains a lot of the scenes which were deleted, and even more. I wonder if they are in the script?

My favorite deleted scenes are of Sonny after Vito's shooting. Especially the scene where he can't bring himself to sit at Vito's desk. That was very poignant.

I've read that Caan was very upset that these scenes were cut, and that he thinks he would have won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor if they weren't.

I think he's right---not that that sissy Joel Grey should have won anyway.

INT. THE RESTAURANT - DAY

The restaurant is quite empty, despite the excitement out on
the street.

Pentangeli immediately sits at a table with a tall, dark,
snappily dressed young man, CARMINE ROSATO.

Nearby, on the other side of the room is Rosato's brother,
TONY, seated with a group of their men.

At another table in the restaurant is a table of Pentangeli's
people: they are joined by bodyguards.

PENTANGELI
Rosato, where's your brother?

ROSATO
Sitting right behind you.

Pentangeli glances behind himself.

PENTANGELI
He don't want to talk?

ROSATO
We worked it all out beforehand.

PENTANGELI
Are we going to eat or what?

ROSATO
Sure, on me. I got Diner's Club.

PENTANGELI
(sarcastically)
Forget it; I'm suddenly without an
appetite. You're making big
trouble, Carmine.

ROSATO
You weren't straight with us,
Frankie, what else could we do?

PENTANGELI
We could have talked first, saved a
lot of running around.

ROSATO
You wasn't listening, you didn't
want to talk.

PENTANGELI
Don't I look like I'm listening?

ROSATO
We want Brooklyn one hundred
percent. No more taxes to you. We
want to be only loosely connected
with your family -- sort of a
under-family all of our own. Then
we can act on all internal matters
without talking. Also we want you
to inform Michael Corleone that we
can deal directly with him.

PENTANGELI
I'm a little hungry, maybe I'll
order something. Joe.
(one of his men)
Get me some bracciole or something.
And pay cash.
(to Rosato)
And in return for these concessions,
what do you do for me?

ROSATO
We will release the hostages,
number one. Number two, we're here
for you to count on when you need
us. We're independent, but we're
here if you need us. In general,
we'll cooperate with you and your
businesses, and you in turn will
cooperate with us. Pari persu.

PENTANGELI
Pari Persu; what the fuck is Pari
persu...?

ROSATO
My lawyer went over this beforehand.

PENTANGELI
What assurances do I have that
there will be no more kidnapping,
no more hits?

ROSATO
The same assurance we got from you.

PENTANGELI
What if I say shove it?

ROSATO
Then Carmine Fucillo and Tony Blue
DeRosa will need to be fitted for
slabs.

PENTANGELI
You want a war?

ROSATO
We got no choice.

PENTANGELI
You know if there's a way I'll go
to the commission and the commission
will side with me. That puts me
and the other New York families
against you.

ROSATO
We got friends in the commission.

PENTANGELI
(getting angry)
I'm talking about Italians!

ROSATO
What about Michael Corleone?

PENTANGELI
He supports me.

ROSATO
Maybe, yes... maybe no.

One of Pentangeli's men approaches with a plate of Italian
food.

Pentangeli stands up, angered by this remark of Rosato's; he
pushes the dish of food out of the surprised Bodyguard's
hands.

PENTANGELI
You drove old Pete Clemenza to his
grave, Carmine; you and your
brother. Turning on him; trouble
in his territories -- you and your
demands. I hold you responsible,
just as though you shot him in the
head. And I ain't gonna let that
go for long!

Pentangeli walks out of the restaurant; there's a little
tension between the bodyguards of the two factions.

ROSATO (O.S.)
Hey, Five-Angels...

He gives him the arm.

Frankie's face turns red, like he wants to have it out here
and now; but Willy Cicci calms his down, and they all make
their move out.

EXT. THE RESTAURANT - DAY

Pentangeli gets into the car.

PENTANGELI
Nobody I hate calls me Five-Angels
to my face!

He slams the door.

Reading through the early draft of the script now...something dawned on me, and I am sure it's been discussed before. Did Michael knowingly send Pentangeli to his death with the Rosatos? It sounds like he did...

Michael's scene with Pentangeli in NY was Michael at his most manipulative. I believe he was almost certain that Roth was behind the Tahoe shooting, but he wanted to put Frankie to a test. After scaring the s**t out of Frankie, he then tells him he wants him to "help me take my revenge." Frankie practically passed out with relief: "Michael...anything."
"Settle these problems with the Rosato brothers." Michael made Frankie put his head in the lion's mouth. If he settled the problems with the Rosatos, that would be one more burden off Michael's shoulders. If the Rosatos whacked Frankie, it'd be more proof that Roth was behind the Tahoe shooting.

OK...so the way I remember it (and I just read it) Mike makes it sound like HE will kill Pentangeli by asking Roth if he has any problems with the decisions. "He's small potatoes," Roth responds.

So if Roth knew that Mike was going to have Frankie killed, why did he go ahead and give the OK to the Rosatos?

And by the way, reading the Part II script...a lot of the stuff we discuss about it here are somewhat answered or fleshed out -- but many other things are still vague.

I agree pretty much with TB's analysis. In addition, I believe that Michael knew Frankie well enough to know that Frankie would respond the way he wanted him to by feigning anger in that situation. (by the way, I do think that Michael was authentically angry that an attack had taken place in his home).

However, Roth couldn't know for sure if Michael would murder Frankie. In any case, even if he did know, that wouldn't necessarily favor Roth because Michael would then select Frankie's successor. Roth's plan was to keep Michael off balance as much as possible; Roth didn't want things settled with the Rosatos. Turmoil was in Roth's favor.

Although Roth's Tahoe assassination plot failed, Michael convinced him that he blamed Pentangeli for the attack, and even asked Roth's permission to whack him. Roth must have gloated.

But when, instead of killing Frankie, Michael ordered him to meet with the Rosatos, Roth had to know that Michael didn't blame him after all--meaning that he might blame Roth. So, Roth gave the order to the Rosatos to kill Frankie, the better to eliminate Michael's ally in NY. And, since Roth's plan by then was to lure Michael to Havana, get $2 million from him, and have him assassinated by government officials, he and the Rosatos were simply clearing the way for them to take over NY.

In the original GF2 script wasn't ther a scene at the end where Anthony leaves his father after he witnessed fredo's death. I mean i think the scenes at the end of GF2 with him sitting there along comes after his son confronts him. Can anybody clarify if this was right?

Michael deceived Roth into killing Pentangeli in order to confirm his suspicions.

Also, he was looking for Roth's reaction when he proposed to kill Pentangeli, and ofcourse to make Roth feel comfortable knowing that he wasn't suspected.

This scene was part of the second draft (apparantly the final draft before shooting began).

In the early draft, Roth says it doesnt matter who Mike picks as Frankie's successor...that he'll respect whoever he picks. Maybe he was appeasng Mike by saying that since Roth planned on Mike being dead shortly afterward.

I like the Mike & Kay in bed scene because it showed how close they really were.
And Sonny walking around in the house after getting the news. It's my favorite scene of Sonny because we see him really helpless, really trying.

I never said it was a deleted scene lol. As Sonny stated in one of the early drafts they had a scenes that takes place some time after fredo death where Anthony witnessed it because he was sent to his room instead of going to reno and saw the killing. Thats how in part 3 he knows he killed fredo
