Every week I'm going to post about past and current members of the Patriarca Crime Family. This week we talk about a Mafia soldier in the Patriarca's, Domenic Isabella, who was not in the spotlight and not very well known, but on the streets of East Boston he was feared to no end.

Domenic Isabella as a young man was inducted into the Columbo Crime Family in New York where he was raised and born. When he was arrested for his first federal offense, he was sent to Atlanta to do his time, and thats where he met Patriarca Family soldier Ilario "Larry Baoine" Zannino. The pair hit it off big and Domenic moved his entire family to Malden, Ma,...

and was able to transfer from the Columbo's to the Patriarca Family. He start hangin around East Boston and bought a building on Chelsea street. He converted the building to a bar and named it the "Pony Lounge." He ran bookmaking and shylocking out of there, and split his profits with Zannino who rose up in the ranks to Consigliere of the Patriarca's while Raymond was the Boss and Jerry Angiulo the Undeboss. In the late 1960's early 1970's Joe Barboza became a government witness against Patriarca, The Angiulo brothers, Zannino, Henry Tamaleo, Peter Limone, Lou Greco, and Joe "The Horse" Salvati. So word come down from Raymond and Jerry to "kill that expletive and his whole crew." The word was Isabella...

helped exterminate 2 members of Barboza's crew, Joseph "Chico" Amico with Joseph "J.R" Russo, and Patrick "Patsy" Fabiano, both very feared guys. Later on Zannino, along with Ralphie "Chong" Lamattina and John Cincotti, would ambush Arthur "Tash" Bratzos and Thomas Deprisco in the Nite Lite Cafe in the North End, who were going around raising money for Babrboza-big mistake. Then of course JR Russo got Barboza in 1976 in San Francisco as he walked out his door with several shotgun blasts to the head and chest of Barboza. This set the tone for the Boston Faction of the Patriarca's, for years they were considered to be the weaker group strenght wise, well no one messed with them after

the Barboza crew extermination. That crew killed alot of people, and the Mafia took them all down. As the 1980's came in Isabella began to drink and gamble excessively, and began to run up debts all over "In Town," or the North End with his superiors the Angiulo's. Then finally when the indictments were handed down against the Angiulo's, Zannino, and Isabella, Isabella had no money and wasnt getting help because of the money he owed, he was on his own. He served his sentence in the case and shortly when he was released he died of lung cancer from smoking. But now today everyone knows who he was and the respect he held, he even was the middle man with the Genovese crew in Springfield, Ma. People like Al Martino...

Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin visited the Pony Lounge to see Domenic Isabella. He was such a big figure in Boston, you can read the transcripts from the doghouse and hear Jerry Angiulo say, "If we gotta go to war with the Hill, we got J.R, we got the rest ah them Maverick Square Boys, and boy we got Domenic wid us, and that's all we'll expletive need. Those harps el be finished." Then Zannino jarred out, "Yeah, I'll like to drive by and machine gun all those mother(expletive) at the Lancaster street garage, but the Hill is wid us and we're wid the Hill." Domenic could have played for the Cubs, but he was a gangster through and through, and when the walls backed in and he had no help from his so called "Family." Did he rat? No.

He went to the can kept his mouth shut, and then died a sick man. Rest in peace Domenic no matter what you did, you looked out for East Boston and East Boston looked out for you, it's too bad your friends didnt.

awesome post i must say, i have one question

why were there a number of colombo guys who transferred to the patriarca's back in the day? looks like they saw the writing in the family that the family was heading for a collision course and culminated int he colombo wars of the 90's.

Tommy Shots: They want me running the family, don't they know I have a young wife?
Sal Vitale: (laughs) Tommy, jump in, the water's fine.

Well to answer the question my man Dapper, Domenic transferred in the late 1960' early 1970's, not the 1990's. The Columbos are now the 5th largest out of the 5 New York Families, but under Joe Profaci, Joe Columbo, and Carmine Persico, they were consistantly the 3rd biggest in earnings and strength. Enrico "Henry the Referee" Tameleo transferred over and was Raymond Patriarca's Consigliere until Joe Barboza put him away on false charges. And I believe Nicholas "Nicky" Bianco was a Columbo transfer as well. Raymond was a well repsected guy with New York, especially the Columbo's and the Genovese's. But Raymond knew Columbo guys well and always had men at his disposal with them. But these transfers did not see the wars ahead.
