I am not a C&W fan at all, but if I had to choose an artist that appeals to me it probably would be Johnny Cash. I would most familiar with his hits that crossed over to the R&R charts.
I never bought any of his music but I did like his deep, clear voice and some of his music. I remember the Folsom prison album which was a big hit and then of course "A Boy Named Sue" was hilarious.

The Johnny Cash Show had some great guests....Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt. Johnny was under-appreciated for his songs of social commentary; The Man in Black, Sunday Morning, Ira Hayes (forgive me if the titles are not quite right)
